D&D (2024) Is anyone going to use the new 2024 backgrounds?

Hulk anyone?
So Bruce banner isn't strong, neither is Dr Jekyll. What you need is a Barbarian subclass that allows you to swap your Internet and your strength when you rage. The closet you can do to actually make a character like that is a Beast Druid where you fluff your animal forms adjust your hulk rage.
Or you can play the Alchemist from Ghostfire Games which is designed for this trope. The barbarian is just not the right fit for that concept.

If Barbarian isn't the right fit for "guy who gets stronger when angry," then I think the Barbarian class has utterly failed to deliver what it's promising.

The Barbarian is a warrior who gets stronger when he rages not a guy with a 10 strength that turns into a guy with a 30+ strength (if we are talking about the hulk)

The Hulk, the Hyde are about smart weak guys who can not fight transforming into strong tough guys who can fight. That is definitely not what the barbarian is about.

I think the problem is, if you want to play a weakling like bruce banner who becomes strong only when transforming when angry, then barbarian doesn't really work since to play one effectively you need to already be strong. A subclass that switches strength for intelligence also wouldn't really work well with barbarian unless the game starts at 3rd level since, otherwise, you have to wait a couple levels.

But customizers don't make up all players. Very likely not even near the majority of them. In my experience, and given human nature, most players just happily take the off-the-shelf options. And that is a 100% valid choice.
I might have done it by accident, so please quote me at the point I demeaned or invalidated the style.

Yes but to be honest no one is going to play a sage who then turned into a barbarian, you have specifically picked a combination. That doesn't work thematically or mechanically on purpose just so you could try to say you are right.
And even then, you could easily pick 2 cantrips and a 1st level spell, that is useful for a barbarian.

Lets say:

Cantrips:
Mending
Prestidigitation

1st level spell:
find familiar

Reasoning:
mending to fix your equipment
Prestidigitation to help woth survival
(two tricks learned in a former life)

A familiar is always nice to have. For scouting around.

Neither of those spells is combat related, so no problems with rage, but bring quite some utility.

+2 con, +1 wis

Edit:
So you start with

Str 15
Dex 12
Con 16
Int 10
Wis 14
Cha 8

You were a sage that was rather wise than booknsmart. But even though you learned not that fast, you were able to work through a lot of nights to keep up. To help you concentrate and keep you awake, you used to work out a bit.

Even though you did not talk a lot to other people and were a bit awkward, you were quite adept at aquiring knowledge on travels by observing. On one such travel, your ship crashed and you had to get along in the wild. Your familiar helped you hunting. Making fire was also not a problem. You could mend a few items that helped you surviving. After a while, you learned how to live int the nature and And of defending against beast with your channeled strength. Eventually you bond with nature spirits. So you became a wildheart barbarian.

I bet at level 4 a nice feat like great weapon fighting or so will allow you to keep up with most other barbarians.

And in this way, sage is not only a tag you put on your character without actually picking skills or feats that fit, but also having stats and skills and a feat to match.

Then pick a background that fits your backstory best or customize your own.

Customizing is the whole point. If that is allowed this is entirely moot. If you are customizing a background though then you are not using one of the PHB backgrounds.

As far as class, that has nothing to do with background.

But your backstory does matter and that is thematically tied to your background. Your starting class certainly does because there are story elements to it. Your Wizard did not have a spellbook just pop into his hands, your Warlock made a pact of some sort and your fighter learned to use weapons some how.
