D&D 5E (2014) Is Conan in 5e?

While I really loved the [Mongoose Conan] game overall (played a Stygian Borderer/Noble), this DR element made fights pretty grindy. I remember the climactic battle with cultists being a case of "3 damage", "2 damage", "3 damage". It just went on and on. Kind of like fighting zombies in 3.5e.

This is a digression, but here goes: she was meant to be a figurine of wonderous power but during the creation process something imbued her with animus far beyond the normal figurines. The story leaves a lot of questions unanswered, but it implies the panther that was to be sacrificed was more than a natural panther, and something about the fact that she sacrificed herself and the ritual was used to preserve her life instead of end it made her into something else entirely. In any case, there isn't a version of the 'figurine' rules that accounts for her independence and longevity. I think the normal panther figurine can be out like, an hour a day.

Guen may be a better then normal figurine of wonderous power but she still is one. She can remain out 12 hours once a week.

IMO, Conan's a Great Weapon Battlemaster-Fighter with a few levels of Rogue... I'd say at least 3, because he has moves that look like an assassin's. Usually crits people he surprises, etc.

He's got a savage origins background, but the term Barbarian has specific mechanical meaning in D&D that Conan never has lived up to.

I'd also put him around 16th level. And probably be Fighter—Battlemaster 10 Rogue—Assasin 6.

A lot of times we like to put our literary comparisons at a super high level, when there's really no evidence to do so. Is Conan a 15th or 20th level equivalent? Why? I'm trying to remember (I'll admit it's been a long while), but I think some of the toughest fights he's had were against a stegosaurus (which he had to poison to beat because he couldn't go toe to toe with it), and a giant ape that just about killed him (I want to say there were chains or something involved there). Most everything he's fought would be the equivalent of CR 1/2 or 1/4 creatures.

If you look at the evidence and do the best comparison you can, most of our literary heroes would be no higher than level 10 or so. I remember an article in Dragon way back when that had Gandalf as a 5th level wizard lol. But really, what's wrong with that? Back when levels had names, a 4th level fighter was a "hero". To put it into context, a 4th level PC can go toe to toe with a brown bear. How many people do you know can do that? That's definitely what I'd call a "hero'.

Ok first off i go toe to toe with brown bears every morning before breakfast usually i just grab there skull and crush it. 2ndly good point i think people often forget that cr 15-20 characters are basically going from being a demi-god to a full blown god.

Yeah, Conan is not movie Beowulf. At least, not usually.

I don't think you can assassinate with a strength weapon so we might just have to let that part go. Or call it the GWF feat, and he uses the advantage from surprise to counter the -5.

Yeah that's how I always felt, how many of our non superhero fighters have even 20 strength? That's like a young dragon. How many of our fantasy sorta heroes are legit lvl 20? Legolas?

I always thought of Conan as like 5-10 lvls. Doesn't mean he can't get to 20 as a pc and start putting dragons in headlocks. But I wouldn't stat him as lvl 20 out the box.

I don't understand why people want to faithfully reproduce Aaragorn or Conan or even Drizz't anyways. Isn't this your PC, not someone else's? The standard D&D game has different power levels, assumptions, and magic than any other game. Do I want to play Gandalf in D&D? No, because then I'd have a major ban on using my wizard abilities. Why do I want to limit myself so much?
