Is the Mystic (from the Dragonlance Campaign Setting) too weak?

I like the idea of them getting Channel Divine Energy/Divine Channelling as a class feature, essentially undead-turning attempts which can only be used to fuel feats or abilities which require them (or for a minor benefit like the +2 to a saving throw). So, in campaigns that use Divine feats, Mystics can take them. Perhaps also a Divine feat that lets them also spend their Channel Energy on actual turning.
I do wonder exactly how this would stack with getting turning from taking Sun domain or a Turn Undead feat, like if the total number of attempts would stack, which could make a Sun Mystic a potent option.

However, as a campaign specific class, giving them things like DR or spell-like abilities should reflect things we've seen mystics do in the source material. I'm not a big expert on Age of Mortals era Krynn, so I can't say that there is anything that really unites high-powered mystics like that.

The whole theme of mystics is that they have far more flexibility in their magic than a Cleric, and that their magic does have a bit of a theme of influencing life and spirits more than it does inanimate matter.

Cam, I know you're wary of adding domains, because of prestige classes that grant extra domains, but adding an extra domain at higher levels could act as an incentive to keep taking levels in Mystic instead of going for a PrC the moment you are eligible. Perhaps one extra domain at 10th level, for example.

You should check out the Evangelist from Dragon Magazine. I'm not sure which issue, 311, maybe.

It's basicly identical to the Mystic, except it gets 2 domains at first level, and an additional domain every 5 levels, for a total of 6.

Well, he thinks the mystic is too weak, 5 domains can help a lot to power up a class. The spell lists help more than the domain abilities imo. Of course, he may be looking for a particular flavor that the Evangelist doesn't provide, though. There's a dwarven "cleric" in my game who is playing an evangelist and he's enjoying it. I hate the name "evangelist," though. I keep getting a mental image of Ernest Aingley slapping people upside the head and yelling "Be heeeaaalllled!!!"

Sure, if he just wants to tinker with the mystic, but if he wants the work already done, or a semi-official source, the Evangelist is there. It's one of my favorite classes, so I try to pimp it whenever I can. :-)

I'm not a fan of the Evangelist precisely because it has so many domains. The design goal of the mystic is "walking domain," not "more domains than a cleric," which is why the suggestion of channeling positive or negative energy is more appealing to me in this case.

Having "Extra Domain" as a feat would be an option. As to the longevity of the class, the mystic does suffer right now from the same thing the sorcerer does, but in the mystic's case there's no familiar. So, if the energy channeling feature is tied to mystic level and doesn't advance with a PrC, that may be enough to justify it.

And again, I think an "improved" and "greater" domain access feature would do more than adding another domain on top of the one they have.

Cheers,
Cam
