Is trying to grapple an allip low Int or low Wis?

Thread title says it all, I just can't decide. (The character in question had Int, Wis, and Cha of 6 each.)

Definitely Wis in my opinion.

Here's how I usually make my "low int" versus "low wis" decisions:

Most animals have a wisdom of around 10 and an int of about 2 or 3. (in 3rd edition).


Bascially, if an animal would do something "stupid" then it is low int.

If an animal WOULDN'T do the stupid thing, then it is low wis.


Personally, I don't think an animal would ever try to grapple something incorporeal...their basic common sense would prevent it. As such, I'm going with wisdom here.

My cats definetly try to "grapple" spots of light from laser pointers or flashlights, but maybe they are just low wis mammals

Yeah, my cats do too, but my dog looks at them in confusion when they try it.

Cats are all about motion, though...they'll also grapple sticks moving through grass.



I think there it is not about low wis but a particular species vulnerability.


That'd be interesting to exploit as a pc versus a dire lion. Cast "dancing lights" and watch the fun begin!

Allips are incorporeal, right? I put Intelligence. Setting aside any special abilities, trying to grapple an incorporeal creature is a failure of intelligence.

Do animals other than cats react to pictures of animals on TV? Those are incorporeal.

Dogs might not go after an allip for a similar reason as TV -- they perceive a lot of the world with smell and the allip doesn't have any. Of course, smell relies on Wis too. I guess Wis is the consensus choice. Seeing through illusions is kind of Wis too.

Neither. Your cat or dog has a concept of "play", separate from its concept of catching food. It isn't unintelligent or unwise if the critter doesn't actually expect to win, but is instead just horsing around.

It depends. Is this the first time he's tried to grapple one?

And has he seen it move through anything?

And is he wearing a "ghost touch suit," which would then theoreticaly allow him to grapple it?

I think it comes down to knowledge (int) if he's never seen one before. Or wis if he's been observing it for a bit.

And I was more hung up on the wis draining touch than the more harmless aspect of "look like a moron for trying to hug a ghost."

EDIT: Coincidentally, if it's low int or wis to try to grapple an Allip, then what do people make of the fact that it has Int 11, Wis 11? If you don't know what I'm referring to, I mean reconciling that with the short descriptive blurb given for combat:
"An allip is unable to cause physical harm, although it doesn’t appear to know that. It keeps flailing away at enemies, yet it inflicts no wounds. "
