Is your D&D campaign a game or a story? If a PC dies, does it through your campaign off? If a new Player wants to join the campaign, do you have to work in a background/reason story?

It's both.

Working in a reason for new characters to join (or old ones to leave) is part of the game. Figuring out how to go on when the party leader has been crushed to death by an owlbear is part of the game.

The story moves the game along. The game moves the story along. In my style of play, they are inextricable.

8-Game, 2-Story.

I'd actually like a more story-oriented campaign, but it wouldn't be practical with my current group and I'm quite happy with a good game. :)

I'm about 60% game 40% story. I like combat though so most sessions I run have a fight in them.

To me the game elements are just the vehicle for the heart of the thing, the story. 8 Story, 2 Game. Be it D&D, GURPS, Exalted, or whatever game system, the important thing to me is the story. I got no beef with fudging dice and bending rules for the sake of the story.

In high school, it was mostly game because I as a GM didn't know any better.
In college, it was mostly story.
In real life, it's mostly game because my players think I don't know any better.
