Is'Merith - Campaign Thread

[SBLOCK=OOC]I'll get a full post up in a bit, but for the magic item identifying, I was going with DMG pg.136. “The identify spell is the fastest wa to reveal an item's properties. Alternatively, a character can focus on one magic item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, the character learns the item's properties, as well as how to use them. Potions are an exception; a little taste is enough to tell the taster what the potion does.” That said, I think that's pretty commonly houseruled back to requiring Identify. Whichever is cool with me.[/SBLOCK]

[sblock=OOC]sorry, I was not aware. Cool to know though. See my post again for the changes and therefore the item information![/sblock]

While the boys examine the things, and with the poisoner pretty well out of it, Shen decides to talk to Mina about trees. Or, about the people who live among them, mostly. And, to anyone with the patience to listen, really. It's a good diversion from the gash in her side, and it's nice to be reminded that something green and not horrible is out there, somewhere.

"Anyways, this tribe has a story they told me. They think that long ago, there were these three brothers, which was a bear, a wolf, and an eagle. Ain't sure what their mama musta been like, but that's the story.

"Anyhow one day the bear, he gets all fed up, and he's like, 'I'm stronger'n both a' you!', and he socks Wolf right in the jaw, and Wolf goes down like a sack a' rocks. So then he goes to punch Eagle, but eagles can fly, right, so he just flies up and starts peckin' and scratchin' Bear, who's a fat dope and can't do nothin' about it, he's just gettin' beat all to heck 'cause Eagle's too fast for him.

"So Bear runs off. But then Wolf gets up and he's like 'imma still beat you, Eagle,' but Eagle's like 'no y'ain't, anyhow I'm tired' and he flies away. But Wolf's got this nose, he can smell the zit pop on an orc's left butt cheek from fifty paces. So wherever Eagle tries to land, Wolf's already found him, and he can't stop. Pretty quick, Eagle gets all tuckered out, and he gives up. So the point is, everyone's got their own strengths, and no one's the best. And this tribe, they have this ritual they do when they're buttin' heads and can't decide what to do, like the brothers.

"First, you hold up one hand." Shen helpfully demonstrates. "Then you chant, 'brothers three, come to me.'" Again, she pauses to demonstrate, repeating the chant as she moves her hand up and down with its rhythm. "Now, you reach out to the spirits of the brothers, and let one a' them guide you. Just feel it. And the one that speaks to you, you let it out.

"If it's Eagle, you spread your hand out like a wing." Shen holds her hand with fingers splayed, palm to the ground. "If it's bear, you make a fist, powerful-like." She balls her hand up. "And if it's Wolf, you do like this, like a jaw." She points two fingers forward, parted. "And the other guy does the same thing. If you do Eagle and he does Bear," she explains as she does a gesture with each hand, in case the concept was too hard, "you win. But if he does Wolf, you lose. But if you actually did Bear, you win!" Shen then whispers conspiratorially: "I always do Eagle. It's the best."

"And that's how they stop fights from startin'. This way they don't have to show off to each other, they can just let fate decide, you know? Been tryin' to spread that around, but it hasn't picked up yet."

She looks at the sky wistfully. "...hey, wanna try them potions?"

[sblock="OOC"]I'll try those remaining bottles of stuff, why we're identifying. Hopefully I can at least tell whether they're good for us or bad.[/sblock]

Daedarai stood and stretched. His associates looked stronger from the rest, but they didn’t need to delay anymore. Walking over to the half-orc, “Oo’Raff, thank you for sharing your wisdom earlier. I confess that I haven’t had much experience in the field. I was kept behind the scenes for most of my training. However, my advancement is allowing me to see how the guild lives and breathes. There is honor among our ranks, brother. Thank you for showing me more of it.” Shaking his hand, he continued, “I will keep an eye on the board and when your time comes to return home, I hope to be the one to bring you a bottle of ale for the trip.”

Turning to the addled half-elf, he calmly spoke, “Tro’leera? My associates and I will be escorting you home. We will get you your medicine, but we need you to follow us and stay safe. Are you ready for our trip?”

[SBLOCK=OOC]I put it in the other thread too, but I think with the cantrip enchantment, Shen would probably benefit the most from the guild armor. If you want it, feel free to narrate Daedarai as bringing it to her and telling her as much.[/SBLOCK]

"I certainly hope we don't run into any sand goblins while this fool is with us, I certainly don't plan on risking my life to save him again." Turning to Daederai he says "Who do you plan on having watch this delirious bastard? Who knows whether he's going to be sane enough to stick with us."

“Excuse me a moment, Tro’leera. Please, prepare for our journey.”

Turning towards Isaac, he motioned the halfling to follow him and walked a short distance away. “I know this is not what we expected, but the goal of the mission has not changed. While his present state is certainly not ideal, it does not diminish his value to us when we get him back to the city. However, I brought us this mission and it’s my responsibility to see it through. I’ll keep him with me, and if we face those devils again, I’ll protect him.”

Moving back to the half-elf, he continued “Tro’leera, you’ll need to stay near me as we travel. Do you feel like you can do that?”

The half elf stops his muttering and slowly raises his head, an angry look in his eyes, he speaks to Daedarai, glancing over at the Halfling Fool? I am no fool Halfling... Just a man with his demons... And if you do not wish to battle them too, I suggest you get me back... Tonight is the worst I've been and the moon speaks to me of DEATH. He speaks in anger. Small amounts of spittle exit his mouth. He clenches his teeth and goes back to muttering, standing up, he moves beside Daedarai, ready to leave. Daedarai nods before moving to Shen, making an offer of the magical studded leather to her before the party prepares to leave. After saying his piece before to the half-Orc, he did not but smile and nod.

[sblock=OOC]Last chance for role-play before the train leaves the station people. I was hoping Mina might respond, but she might be busy. LOVE the rock-paper-scissors reference from Shen by the way!

As for potions:
-1 healing potion
-2 antidotes
-1 potion of invisibility!!![/sblock]

Alejandro walks up to Tro'leera, all guileless smile and affability.

"Hello, I'm Alejandro. Here."

He hands the poisoner the goblin goo torch.

"To light our way. If things get interesting, it's a javelin under all that crap. Feel free to stab any sand goblins you might see if need be."

He looks at Isaac.

"Same order as before, except now we have Troll Era", he deliberately spells it that way in his head, "Instead of Mr Rocks-for-Brains. I'll take the rear as before. Shall we? I've got a few errands to run."

He takes his position and, thinking about it, as silver doesn't appear to be a key element needed to deal with these sand goblins, decided to switch to his trusty club with nails, the Testiculator.

He swings it a few times to remind himself of the heft. Then he thinks on what he just heard about the moon. Has this joker caught lycanthropy? He switches back to the staff again, just in case. He's heard that silver is good against creatures of the moon. Something to do with silver being the tears of the moon as it wanes, shed to earth as it witnesses the sadness in the world before being restored every month with hope.

[sblock=idea] I'll try to get some insight into what might keep Troll Era calm with a view to implementing a suitable Minor Illusion in case he bugs out on us. Er. Wolfs out on us.

Ah, crap. Never mind.[/sblock]

“Tro'leera, I realize that I should have introduced everyone earlier. Please forgive me that lapse of judgment. I mentioned my name when we first met, but allow me to share again. My name is Daedarai. I am the senior member on this mission. The halfling is Isaac. I know that he can be blunt, but he is a whirlwind with his twin blades. Alejandro, you just met. He is a warrior whose fury could make a giant quake in fear. The elven lady is Shen. The desert is like a second home to her and she will unerringly guide us back to the city. Finally, Mina has a warrior's heart of hardened steel. When the sand goblins surrounded us, she unerringly shot them down with her bow without hesitation. These men and women are some of the most talented people that I have ever met. We will get you safely home. I want you to trust in that. However, I need to ask you to trust us so that we can accomplish that task. Is there anything we should know about your condition that would help us protect you during this trip?”

Shen carefully uncorks the first bottle, one of the yellow ones. She gives it a sniff, then daubs a bit on her finger and tastes it. Smells minty, tastes sort of sour and pierces through your nose, like vinegar and garlic. Bleh. "This is some sorta poison cure, for sure. Made stuff like this. Kinda old, though."

She does the same with the clear liquid. Before she can pinpoint the taste, her mouth goes sort of half-numb, and she forgets the taste as if it was never there. The smell is the same. It's not that it has no smell, more like it...anti-smells. It's not awful, whatever it is. "Betcha this helps you hide. Ghost potion or somethin', maybe."

They still have a little time to wait. The pain in her leg is just a dull burn now, stinging a little when she moves it. Practically good as new.

As everyone prepares to leave, Daedarai finds his way to her, carrying the armor they found. "Shen, a moment please. I believe I've managed to identify the nature of this artifact. It is indeed enchanted, though its properties will only actualize for the person to whom the armor is attuned. They seem to be illusory in nature; the armor can be cleaned or tarnished, keep the wearer cool, and create some aural distraction. Spend some time with it, and these properties should reveal themselves to you." He hands over the suit, which Shen accepts, bowing slightly, though with a mildly confused expression. "Be wary, though. There's a hunger in that magic. Overusing it may exact some kind of price from you.

"It's yours on one condition: I'm interested in its history, so I'll have to ask to examine it once more on our return. Agreed?"

"Sure," Shen replies. "If it's okay to ask...I already got armor. Why're you givin' me this?"

Once again, that which Daedarai thought obvious was apparently unclear. "Most of us have some command of magic, so we wouldn't find it to be of much value. But its magic seems especially appropriate to you, as someone who values a stealthy approach."

"Oh," Shen replies. Magic, yeah right. Just because something's made from some metal that doesn't rust or whatever, people want to call it "magic." And it's the same people who think they can fool you with that waving-your-hands-around nonsense. Didn't the others notice that she'd already caught on to the tricks? Well, when she gets the time, she'll give the thing a once-over and see if it really is that useful.

She thanks Daedarai and, being polite, tries it on. The new stuff is clean, she'll give it that. Plus, now she has a uniform while she's with the guild.

Overhearing Isaac, she heads in his direction. "If you're worried, make sure to holler if anything funny happens." She points to her lasso, still hanging over her shoulder. "Wouldn't be my first hog-tie."

[sblock="Elementary, my dear Watson"]Parasitic magic? Super old? Blighted desert? I smell something afoot.

Sorry this breaks the narrative order, I was hoping to get it in earlier but just couldn't find time.

Edited to include some dialog so Daedarai doesn't just float in and out of the scene wordlessly.[/sblock]
