How does that fix pen and paper, though? The whole player base isn't going digital, so they need to fix both.

There were people who claimed that Gutenberg ruined the 'personal' nature of the Bible by not having a human copy down each letter, like it had always been done.

I'm coming up on 50. Using PDFs on a tablet or monitor is not always easy. But running a game from them via Discord, VTT, or other technological means (even play-by-post) is easy. I know that's why many publishers are going that way, and have been for decades now.

if they give the orc more HP and more to hit is it the same CR?
I think the idea of CR needs to be dropped entirely. It's a broken concept that can't be made to work. What is a challenge to a 15th level group that consists of 2 wizards, a fighter and a paladin won't be the same challenge to a group of a fighter, a rogue, a cleric and a bard.

They need to teach DMs how to assess the group strengths and weaknesses compare those to a monster's strengths and weaknesses.

Then you're saying that WotC is great at calculating CR? Because their entire history including 5e speaks volumes against that position.

This isn't something you can say with confidence. If they are making changes, the power levels will change as well.
They noted that their math for calculating CR has improved since the MM. You need only look at Volo/ToF to MotM to see they have made adjustments to the numbers without changing the CR. I suspect the MM will get similar adjustments with the goal to get outliers in a given CR (those whose math is too low or too high for its CR) and move them more in line. I suspect a lot of creatures will get nip/tuck style corrections rather than rebuilds, but I expect a few will get new options as well.

Regardless, I think rebalancing monster math will be a net positive regardless if you use 14 or 24 PCs.

no, I am saying they will be as good now as they were in 2014, maybe a little better

Either way you can use a 2014 monster and its 2024 version interchangeably

I can, there was no outcry over how the power levels changed with MotM, this is just more of the same

Have you ever played 4e? Or Pathfinder 2e?

There are reasons for why CR exists. It just wasn't done well in 2014 5e. (Or relied on other assumptions that most groups didn't use, like how 'Free Parking' ruins Monopoly because it keeps players in the game when they should be out, and the game speeding toward an end).

A lot of us prefer the personal nature of appearing in person to play and/or dislike reading PDFs during a game.
