Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd

i wish i could somehow convince my wife to look at the Man without the negative bias against country music.

Actually, Johnny Cash was never fully comfortable being described as a country singer. He felt that his music really couldn't be described in terms of a single genre. Indeed, after listening to a wide selection of his music over the years, it's obvious that he's been also been influenced by Rock and Roll, the Blues, Bluegrass, Soul, etc.

In fact, he's one of only three people who have been inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (the other two being Hank Williams and Elvis Presley).

All of Johnny Cash's albums on American have several cover songs, although none is a Pink Floyd song. I have the discs here in front of me.

American Recordings -- Thirteen (Glen Danzig); Bird on a Wire (Leonard Cohen); Down there by the Train (Tom Waits). (The Liner notes for this album are also amazing).

Unchained -- Rowboat (Beck); Rusty Cage (Soundgarden); Southern Accents (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers)

Solitary Man -- I Won't Back Down (Tom Petty); Solitary Man (Neil Diamond); One (U2)

The Man Comes Around -- Hurt (Nine Inch Nails -- this song simply kills me. I can't listen to it, it's so powerful. And let's just not talk about the video); Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon and Garfunkle); Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode); In My Life (The Beatles)

Rick Rubin just brought Johnny songs that he thought fit. Boy did they.

If it's not obvious, I am a huge fan. His music changed my life.

Don't forget I Hung my Head (Sting), First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack), Desperado (the Eagles), I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (which I believe is a cover of a Willie Nelson song), and We'll Meet Again (which I believe is a cover of an Anne Murray song, but I'm not certain).

I have a pretty extensive collection of Johnny Cash cds, but I don't seem to recall him doing a Pink Floyd cover (but I could be wrong).

I even posted this question on the official website's forum (JohnnyCash.com), and, so far, nobody has heard of it.

I'm not surprised that you're a Johnny Cash fan, considering your nickname. ;)

Okay guys, I have a truly embarrassing confession to make...

I don't think the cover I heard was Johnny Cash after all. :heh:

You must understand, I heard it in a restaurant, over the noise of the patrons on poor speakers. And I'm only a very recent Cash fan, and he was already on the brain since my wife and I had just been talking about whether we were interested in seeing Walk the Line, and... Well, I think my mind filled in details that weren't there.

See, in my search, I've come across a cover of the song--it was "Mother," though I couldn't remember that when I posted the thread--by some relatively obscure country singer and his band. He doesn't even sound that much like Cash, but I'm starting to be pretty sure that this is the song I heard.

My apologies for the confusion, everyone, and I appreciate the effort to help. :o

Well, don't let that stop you from listening to him.

"I walk the line" was the first record album I ever owned. I think I was about 6 years old, and just gotten one of those kiddie phongraphs that played when you closed it.
