Spoilers 'Joy To The World' -- Doctor Who Xmas Special 2024

Well, that was fun

For me this was one of the better Xmas Specials. Moffat wrote it, and I think he's at his best when he's writing standalone high-concept episodes rather than showrunning (not that he was bad at that--he was an excellent showrunner, but his best bits were things like Blink, etc.)

Ncuti Gatwa was the best I think he's been yet. Though this was shot in early 2023, apparently! Before The Legend of Ruby Sunday, his first episode even came out.

Loved the timey-wimey stuff. Classic Moffat closed-loop paradox.

The TARDIS would have totally circumvented this entire plot but there was a one-sentence throwaway line about why he couldn't use the TARDIS.

One weird thing to me is that while I know it can't work from a storywriting perspective, why can't the Doctor simply summon the TARDIS from anywhere in time and space? He can wave his sonic at a mobile phone which can then call anywhere in time and space, so he has the ability to send signals anywhere and anywhen instantaneously. He can talk to UNIT in real-time in 2024 when he's in the year 5 Billion in a different galaxy. Why can't that signal be 'come to this point in space/time'? Or even 'come to this point in space/time but 5 minutes ago'?

But yeah, that would literally make him a god. I get that it basically breaks any plot you could ever devise; it just feels a bit contrived sometimes and the throwaway 'TARDIS won't work in this situation' line just felt like a throwaway gloss-over.

Bit of the usual 'love > science' stuff at the end. Why did her mum die and then her soul or whatever flew like a glowy thing to the star which was when her daughter flew into the air? (And also where was that star?) But that's the nature of the show.

Those pedantic complaints aside, I really enjoyed this episode.

At this point the fact Villengard executives haven't added "Needs to be immune to the power of love" to the weapon specifications they're sending to their engineers points to the lack of management initiative that doomed the corporation. A truly competent arms dealer would have found out a way to weaponize love by now or at least install a software update to patch that weakness.

Overall above average for Moffat (I didn't even need to see his name on it to spot his fingerprints).

Ncuti Gatwa once again shines.

If I was the showrunner and felt cruel I'd have it be revealed that this was how Akhaten or Torajii came to be. It would turn out that having merged consciousnesses trapped inside a star isn't conducive to a healthy mental state.

The TARDIS doesn't just come when it's called, it's not a puppy. Actually, I get strong cat vibes from it.

Sneaky references —

Hobbit door
Sylvia Trench (James Bond)

Anyone spot any others? Other than the big obvious Bethlehem of course.

I liked the Doctor's collection of TARDIS models and memorabilia. Are they just police box models in-universe, or has the TARDIS been spotted around the world enough times that there's a subculture dedicated to it?

The Doctor's reaction to being handed a sink plunger was fun.

If the Time Hotel has bookings for Christmas 2025 in New York, is something memorable supposed to happen there? Hints of next year's Christmas special, maybe?

Were they all memorable events? One was a random dinosaur and another was just a train journey. I know they had some big events, but they weren't all special events were they?

Mr Benns Any Era Clothes was the shop in the Time Hotel - Mr Benn was a BBC childrens show about a man who visits a costume shop then steps through a door to the costume-appropriate time and place.

Also Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on the Everst climb.

The two woman recalled in Blitz Manchester was a reference to Madam Vastra and Jenny

I finally got back from Xmas and caught up, enjoyed the episode including the corny rise of the Bethlehem Star. Enjoyed the references. I was hoping Anita might be a new companion, but working in the Time Hotel might be good too. And the Sonic Screwdriver having a holographic AI could be a thing too

Also how did the future Doctor know the code?
