jump vs expeditious retreat?

Plane Sailing

Astral Admin - Mwahahaha!
You know that they reduced the power of the Jump spell in 3.5e, so that it gives a scaling bonus (+10, +20 @5th, +30@9th)...

I just noticed that this makes it pretty useless when compared with expeditious retreat.

Both 1st level spells, both same duration (1min/level), but until you reach 5th level exp. retreat beats jump hands down.

+30ft move *also* gives you +12 jump automatically! Compare that with +10 from the spell that is all about jumping and it seems a bit loony.

The only thing that Jump has that exp. retreat doesn't is that you can cast it on a friend. Apart from that it seems feeble in comparison.

Another example of half-thought-out half-edition hacks to the rule system. Your other option is to stick with the 3.0 rule for this spell.

Besides, the two spells stack, right? ;)

That's a good reason for having both... but it still doesn't address the apparent disparity between the value of the two spells. I think that the people who decided to make Jump a scaling spell just didn't think about Exp Retreat.

Houserules:
I think about giving Jump the longer duration OR a +10 enhancement bonus to speed.

But as mentioned above... potions of Jump.

That was always my plan for 3.5 - use the 3.5 as the base rules and use 3.0 rules as "house rules" where applicable.

I don't really see the problem. Jump does beat Exp. Retreat after 5th level, Jump can be cast on other people (a real plus), and it can be put in potions, and they both stack.

They seem different enought to me. This just means you need to decide between choosing Jump over Exp. Retreat at first level.

At 1st level it isn't even much of a choice! Since Exp retreat lets you jump further AND run faster too :)

(the other problem with the scaling of the spell is that it reduces the point of putting the spell on the ranger spell list (for instance) since their caster level is half character level (unless houseruled in some way)

Regards

Hey Caliban - I was wondering if you were still on here as I just came back last week and this was the first I've seen your name.
