[June] What are you watching?

Since there's so little to watch these days, started to watch The Shield Season 1. Am addicted; Vic really is one of the best anti-heroes ever.

It's the 10-year anniversary of Fox's premature abortion of one of the best shows to grace TV. So I'm remembering by watching Firefly again. They can't take the sky from me.

I'm spending a good chunk of this weekend - in which I am playing the part of a bachelor, the wife and kids being away for 5 days - watching The Avengers. No, not the Marvel superhero team; I'm talking John Steed and Emma Peel. (And no, not the miserable movie version, but rather the original British TV series.) I got the DVD set several years ago and watched them all in sequence, and I think it's time to view some selected episodes.

Re-watching Generation Kill at the moment.

Random fantasy movies on Netflix:
Time Bandits: classic, and uses real dwarfs, not CGI- I feel like there should be a certification label for that, like 'Made in the USA'.

Labyrinth: Solid fairy tale-like plot, interesting to see it as an older person and recognize the coming-of-age themes more clearly- I was six when I saw it the first time, and most of what I remember was that the scene where the goblins steal the kid and the old junk lady scared the bejesus out of me.

Black Death: Very grim- like a film version of a WFRP adventure, but good sets and costumes and always comforting to see Sean Bean being killed while wearing chainmail. Plot was a little uneven to me, but a solid entry in the Flesh + Blood tradition of amoral medieval films.

Black Death = Grim, indeed. Liked it quite a bit. Love Time Bandits.

Since the beginning of the year I have been picking my way through Enterprise and enjoying seeing it the first time since the original broadcast.

I just finished watching through "A Game of Thrones" (both seasons over the last week), which is far better than I think any live-action fantasy show has ever been.

Also about halfway through the second season of "The Mentalist" and wishing it would go up on Watch Instantly instead of disc only.

My Netflix queue is full of other stuff, but I'm mostly watching "Eureka" when not hitting up random movies (or, when my daughters are being really persuasive, Jem and the Holograms or She-Ra/He-Man).

I've been thinking about doing the same with TNG now that the main new shows I watch are off until the fall. I've heard the early seasons were a bit shaky, but it's been so long since I've seen some of them that I'm curious now.
