Keep your WOW TALK out of my D&D

Hm. Well, thanks for the clarifications there, Prof. :) I never played MUDs either, and have had very little exposure to them, or their many kin.

I'll try to be a little less hasty in condemning such terms, I s'pose (grumble, grumble). Not that I usually even bring up said terms in the first place, and well, neither does anyone else (offline) but still. You (that is to say, I) learn something new every day.

"Buffing" and "nerfing" are terms I never heard in tabletop games until after the big MMORPG craze started (Though buffing might've and I was just in the wrong crowds).

I think the first time that I heard the terms "buffing" and "nerfing" was back in the very early days of UO, so right on the front end of that big MMORPG explosion.

Yeah, it's fairly evident that a couple of terms in particular HAD to come from computer games, specifically MUDs and MMORPGS.

MOBs, (spawn) Camping, Medding, Agro are four that spring to mind immediately as having come up because they only make sense in a computer game or the specific mechanics of a particular computer game. Agro in particular was coined as the name for the shortcut game developers used to simplify the AI of monsters. I hadn't heard it used at all until I read the development diaries of the EQ designers when they were talking about the fact that they wrote "agro" lists for the monsters to keep track of how much damage they had received from each player in order to determine which player to attack. I'm sure this is probably a holdover from MUDs as well, however.

Some other terms got shorter simply because of how important those terms were to some computer games and everyone looked for a way to abbreviate them. Port, TP are two that come to mind.

Neither aggro nor pally are unique to WoW.

Very little is unique to WoW, actually. 95% of the lingo -- as well as 95% of the game design -- can be traced to Everquest, and from Everquest to DikuMUD. (And of course that derived heavily from D&D)

LFM Need Heals (2000+), & 2M then G2G.

;) I can see how this would get annoying. Unless you actually play WoW, like I did- in which case it's a rather difficult habit to break. heh.

Just go with it. Maybe get them to invite you to a free month :)

I woudn't be surprised if the "tactic" itself was also something DMs used for "stupid" monsters. I think I did that occasionally.

As long as no one calls his PC a "toon", I think I am fine. Though maybe I should be glad about two-dimensional characters? :D

You remind me about the other night. We had this raid going on in the sewers, and nearly had a total TPK when the MOB kept AOEing, keeping our fighter from full DPS. It's a good thing that the pally could LOH and keep the fighter up since the cleric was out of heals.

LOL always sucks when heals go OOM. Your fighter needs to spec PROT to get more AGGRO.

Yeah, word of advice. Do not use that word, especially around here. I did it ONCE, and got the evil eye by Psion himself!

Gish is cool in my book, because it came from D&D. Shifted context, but still.

Toon? Yeah. Just don't. Arcady and Jack99, I'm looking at you.

I played WoW for quite a while and most of those terms while not terribly eloquent or transparent to outsiders excel in one area, they communicate an idea very quickly which is very handy when you're playing a game that doesn't stop so you can explain something.

There is one that bothers me, and has always bothered me and that's toon. It just irks me for some reason, MMO related use or not.
