Lame Prestige Classes

There is not a single class that can't be made fun of from the right angle. Also, there is not a single class that can't be seen as very good and useful from the right angle.

Except the Metamind. Even throwing in his stupid power crystal and imagining him chucking the most powerful effects he could every round of his level ten ability... this guy has measurably less wattage than a straight up Psion. The only reason to take this class is to hate yourself. It's like a Bard/Loremaster without all the perks.

Devoted Defender is great. One of my favorite games that I ran had a PC who played one.
Yep. Now the Eldritch Knight always seemed lame-o to me, especially with the revision of the Spellsword. But I'm sure someone has fun playing them.

Prestige classes blow. They were made up for anime fanboys that spend too much time imagining final fantasy scenarios.

I never allow them in my games, and my players like that just fine.
I rejoice in your players' enlightened status. Go forth, my little one, and spread the anti-anime gospel to all gamers, in all lands, so that all may be united in universal WrongBadFun-damantalism.

I prefer the EK. The EK, to me, harkens back to the fighter/MUs of an earlier time. The Spellsword, on the other hand, reminds me of how artifical the restrictions against armor in D&D are. Clerics, after all, have as much spellcasting punch as wizards, but no such restrictions. The Spellsword and the revised 3.5 Bard both show there is nothing exceptional about casting in armor, just that Wizards, Sorcerers, and the rest simply can't accomplish it. But philosophy aside...

The EK casts bigger spells. And if you're patient with it, can do so in the same armor or better as a Spellsword.

Actual PC in my campaign (played from level 1):

Ranger 2/Wizard 5/Eldritch Knight 6/Spellsword 1

He uses a bow which he's crafted himself, and is deadly. Great PC.

Cheers!

Assassin--this is a profession, not a class. But hey, let's throw spells on it, because that makes total sense thematically for the sneaky guy who kills people!

What really cracks me up about this is that the whole rationale for doing away with the Assassin class in 2nd Edition was for the very same reason you cite- TSR said that "assassin is a profession, not a class".

That being said, I think the Assassin PrC as is is not very good, but with very little tweaking (mostly dealing with adding campaign flavor to it), it could be a very viable PrC. Which, frankly, is true of most PrCs.

No-one wants to tell me how (or why!) PrC's are leaping over big fish? :( OK then. It will only rattle my brain for a while. Don't let it bother you. *sigh*

A few years ago, it became popular net slang to refer to anything whose heyday was over, and was now all bad or downhill, as having jumped the shark.
Although, IMO, 'leaping over big fish' sounds much cooler. I think we shopuld all use that from now on! :D
