Large PC races

With the general bar raising we've heard is occurring so that drow and human are effectively equal at level 1. I wonder if a Large PC race would be possible without any level adjustment or the like.

I guess the most basic comparison would be is a Large Race no other bonuses equal to a 4e core PC race?

Kinda always had a thing for a Large Humanoid Ferral/Beast PC that would basically fight unarmed by tearing monsters asunder

I think a large PC would have to be a class, rather than a race.

Being size large tends to change a LOT of numbers, at least historically.

Some people in my play group are fond of using Minotaurs as PCs. Being large makes for a great "3.X Defender", so I can only imagine how uber a 4e defender class would be if it was tacked onto a large race.

What makes large PCs in 3E problematic is mostly the extended Reach. And since attacks of opportunity are presumably somehow simplified in 4E, I doubt we will see the same rules again.
So large PCs might (or might not) be fine this time.

That's a $64,000 question. Reach is a serious advantage in the way D&D runs grid based combat. Plus in 4.0, I am betting the enlarge person effect won't be around or at least less common. In 3.5 all normal PC races could expect to benefit from that spell so the ogre PC was not that far ahead. Now that reach will be precious, balancing it will be hard.

I think enlarge person will atleast be in since the Duergar can now use it as one of their I believe, per-encounter abilities.

As for large-characters. Well with the division of Type and Origin, perhaps we will see specific rules for the different Types/Origins. So you could simply add say the Type: Giant template onto a character to have a large-character.

Hopefully things that aren't huge bonuses but are major influences on combat, like enlarge and say...fly, are much higher level than they are now. They have a ridiculously disproportionate effect on battles for their level.

I kinda dislike having large size (or monstrous at all, really) PCs - where's the heroism of one huge monster fighting another huge monster? Quite happy for the option to be in the MM, same as 3rd ed, though.
