League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Who else could be in it?

Gah, I'm sorry...not the Phantom Stranger, the Shadow, as in "who knows what Evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow Knows."

Planetary (the comic) has a recurring storyline detailing heroes from around the turn of the century.

They specifically use Sherlock, the Invisible Man, Dracula, and I believe Edison, as well as others.

In contrast to them were the 'other' iconics....the Jungle Lord, the Man of Adventure, the Man of the East, the aviator, the investigator, the inventor...

All based on literary characters. Fu Manchu, Doc Savage, the Shadow, Tarzan....I'm sorry I don't know the last three, although I believe Tom Swift was supposed to be one of them.

O.Z. Diggs, aging confidence man, balloonist, and exiled ruler of a magical alternate dimension. (Alternatively, Elphaba.)

An assortment of tall tale characters could be stuck in - Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Pecos Bill, etc. Sluefoot Sue would be my first choice, and John Henry my second.

Captain Hook (Peter Pan was written in 1904; otherwise I'd suggest Peter himself.)

H.G. Wells' Time Traveller.

A young Lord Peter Wimsey.

Mowgli.

"Tiny" Tim Cratchit.

Nick Carter. (Not the alleged musician.)

Andrew Ketterly, semi-reformed evil magician.

I second the Shadow, Lamont Cranston I believe? Only Baldwin movie I liked. Fits the theme too. First radio show was in 1937 tho, so I don't know if thats too late.

Mowgli is an inspired addition.

You could certainly pick up on stuff like Pecos Bill or Clay Henry.

The Count of Monte Cristo is roughly time period.

John Carter or his equivalent does seem to appear in the second series.

I'm waiting for Lord Greystoke to appear.

Both Professor Cavor ("Cavorite", remember?) and Artful Dodger have already appeared in the comic, in the first series. John Carter and the Time Traveller appeared in the Allan Quatermain short story.

I recently rewatched The Ghost and the Darkness, and I think Colonel John Patterson might make a good addition to the group, even though he isn't exactly a literary character.

i had a player in an old supers campaign who played Paul Bunyan in modern times as his PC.

turned out to be a real fun character, and having Babe the Big Blue Ox around was a blast. :)

Just a comment, but one of the comics had a bit where Ms. Murray was in the "league offices" and noticed several pictures on the wall, apparently of past leagues with different icons. So a LXG RPG could very legitaatly be set in a different time period with iconic heroes of any decade...

How about the Toshiro Mifune character, Sanjuro, from the Akira Kurosawa films Yojimbo and Sanjuro ? He was from the 1870s, so he might be a graybeard.

For a villain they could use the Whateley patriarch from Lovecraft's Dunwich Horror . He would be a youthful occultist.

So kewl...
