Living Greyhawk CANCELLED in 2008 - rpga report

However, I am convinced that if the Living campaign that was begun in 2000 with 3.0's release was set in the Realms to begin with and not in Greyhawk that we wouldn't be killing some hypothetical 8-year-old Living FR. We would be having a leap forward in the setting and a restart of the campaign. IMO, we are seeing an end to Living Greyhawk because it is Greyhawk and WotC doesn't want it around.

And by not wanting it around, you mean shelving it. No third party licensing. It's too associated with Gygax for comfort.

I don't know about the association with Gygax, I think it is that WotC wanted to cut down on the settings with 3e. The reason Greyhawk was even around any more was because with 3e beginning the RPGA needed a setting for the experimental Living campaign they were about to begin. Rather than give over the prized possession of the Realms to the RPGA, they handed over Greyhawk. No one knew the regional campaign model of Living Greyhawk would become the extreme success.

If they did, WotC would have likely given the RPGA Forgotten Realms to work with. I recall reading Ryan Dancey making some comment about this shortly after his Organized Play ended Living City. I may be misremembering though.

WotC doesnt' like having so many similar campaign settings. Having Living Greyhawk around means having Greyhawk around, which means two similar settings.

The player created campaign is what made LG popular. I cannot fathom the same freedom to develop in a LFR. Not that they will complain since Wizards will heap plenty of love on this RPGA program unlike before.

Of course, the non-living campaign could be Greyhawk. I know that various Living Greyhawk players are against the "bump" model.

Yes.
Glyfair, I am not trying to bring you down, but you are living in a dreamworld.

Unless Greyhawk/LG shows Wizards/Hasbro is can generate a consistent source of income, its done. It is remotely possible that the Expedition to Castle Greyhawk will do well, and that LG can be restructured to turn a consistent profit for Hasbro. But this is pretty much the only way I see Greyhawk as anything but dead. Its really a fan project right now.

WotC hasn't been invested in Greyhawk for quite some time now, but they also realize it has the power to really hurt them if they license it out. So they are quietly burying it.

It is most effective to think of everything WotC/Hasbro does in terms of money. Because thats how they think.

Greetings!

You know, I'm kinda amazed that there may be still some people about that cling to the belief that Greyhawk is somehow still important or relevant to WOTC. It seems to me that the World of Greyhawk has long since been abandoned, and it's beaten and dead carcass has only been grudgingly kept around--and occasionally *pimped*--for the sake of nostalgia, or to maintain some farsical pretense that Greyhawk really isn't dead.

Sad to say, Greyhawk has long been officially ignored, beaten down, neglected, and virtually buried.

Greyhawk is gone. People really should spare themselves the ongoing anguish, disappointment, and frustration, and let go of the belief or hope that WOTC is going to do anything meaningful with Greyhawk.

For WOTC, Greyhawk is dead.

I wish.

All that 'fluff' material they've been ramming down our throats, especially in books like Complete Champion, read almost like "Greyhawk Guide to Religion" as opposed to Generic Divine Sourcebook.

Wish I was reading the same sourcebooks you are. (Eyes shelf with Expedition to Castle Greyhawk and Dragon Mag with Wizard's Three article.)

Greetings!

*shrugs* Well, for those of you that disagree, and think that Greyhawk has indeed been supported well officially, and is a strong and vibrant campaign world--I suppose you are free to do so.

However, most Greyhawk fans that I have ever talked to--the vast majority in fact--would disagree with you. Greyhawk has been dead for years now. There is no comparison. Forgotten Realms has how many supplements? Compare that to what has been produced for Greyhawk in a large time frame. I alluded to the *pimping* support in my post. I, personally, don't think a few adventurers and some magazine articles spread out over ten or 12 or 15 years equals support--certainly not on a viable scale, especially when compared to what has been done for Forgotten Realms.

Semper Fidelis,

SHARK
