Living Greyhawk CANCELLED in 2008 - rpga report

If Greyhawk wasn't important or was to be ignored, they wouldn't bother with the GREYHAWK NAMED SPELLS. Sure, I think the world's dead, but I don't get why they need to keep the named spells.

jh

Because "Melf's Acid Arrow" is Propriatory IP, while an acid arrow is not.

Hey guys, Greyhawk as an adventure setting has always been supported by WotC up to this point , by the simple fact that Paizo Publishing has to send all of the material to be appearing in Dragon and Dungeon (may they rest in peace) to them first to get OK'd prior to sending it to print and enough people at both companies are fans of the setting to make sure it hasn't "gone the way of the dodo". Obviously, WotC has banked on Eberron and Forgotten Realms to be their cash cows. They've also used Greyhawk as their default setting for many years without actively pushing any supplemental products other than adventures. But that's really what Greyhawk is, afterall. It's a setting defined by its adventures. And there has been a steady stream of Greyhawk adventures every year in Dungeon magazine. Oh, and let's not forget the huge 4-panel poster map of Greyhawk that came with Dungeon #120 - 124 (may have issues off a little). Again, WotC supported.

With the advent of 4E on the horizon, Greyhawk may well be forgotten, but then again, it may not. There's not enough information yet about what the exact content of new material is going to be. My impression, and this is based on my own writer/publisher relationship with WotC at the moment, is that Greyhawk will continue much the way it has (just enough Greyhawk adventures coming out each year to keep it going as long as players want to use it).

To say that Greyhawk is dead and that anyone who thinks otherwise is dreaming is utter crap. If that's how it is for you, then so be it, but your own feelings toward it is far from factual, so please stop touting it as if it's some well known truth. It's not.

Sad news.

Looks like Old Yeller, I mean Greyhawk, has finally been taken out behind the shed to be lovingly euthanized with a 30-06. :(
Old yeller was put down because he was a danger. This is more like putting down the family dog bacause it could not work hard enough.

I look at like putting down the family dog because the family bought a new house and didn't think the old dog would adjust well to the new house.

Sound crazy? My former neighbors openly voiced this sentiment about their 15-year-old dog. They bought a new home and thought the old dog wouldn't be able to adjust to the new house so they are considering putting the dog down. They moved, but I haven't heard the dog's fate.

I was thinking about playing in the living greyhawk setting but if they're going to do a FR version, nope I'm not going to sign up for that garbage no thanks.

Greetings!

Hmmm...well, +5 Keyboard, I would disagree with you, and I think you must be dreaming. Evidently, from this poll:

http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=204620

Over 90% of the members seem, oh, I don't know--they seem to think that Greyhawk has been "barely supported" or "Withered and Dead"--so, I guess they must all be delusional heh?

The poll is flawed with hindsight. Of course 50% of the ppl will say its withered and dead...NOW. The other 40% is suspect too because support is all relative from POV. Compared to Dark Sun or Planescape, Greyhawk was getting FR type support.

The only things I know of getting "FR type supprt" are FR and Eberron...

Greetings!

Well, Mortellan, *shrugs*--if you think that Greyhawk has been well-supported, and isn't dead--fine.

I'm not just talking about *now* though. Greyhawk fans have been complaining for *years* that the campaign has been officially dead. The fact that a few adventures have been put out, and articles in the magazines--the consensus has been that Greyhawk has not been well-supported, and has been left to wither and die. 3.0, 3.5--nothing really changed, and it probably isn't going to change in 4E.

Indeed, people can think what they want. I'm merely noting the sad *fact* that the vast majority of Greyhawk fans do not feel it has been supported well, and Greyhawk has been left to wither and die. I guess if the company really did support Greyhawk well, and that the fans didn't feel that Greyhawk has been left to wither and die--well, why would so many people--except for a very small minority--say otherwise?

That just seems like an exercise in mass delusion.

Greyhawk is neglected and dead!--(No it's not! It's well-supported! It has adventures! (a few); it has magazine support!) blah, blah, blah.

All of which, at the end of the day, is NOT what the vast mahority of Greyhawk fans have WANTED, nor is it what Greyhawk fans have CONSIDERED to be sufficient support that it actually feels like a dynamic, vivid campaign--instead of a being withered and dead.

Cheers!

That's why your poll is flawed, if not self-serving. Why couldn't Greyhawk be both well-supported in the past-tense, and dead in the present tense and future?
