Living in a European City for 3 months

Wales isn't a city. He mentioned Bangor. If you do consider Wales, I'ld recommend either the the very North or the very South, so its somewhere with a half decent road link to civilization in case you want to see something other than sheep and hills. In certain parts they will speak Welsh, just to annoy you.

The big question is why are you coming and why only one city?

Yeah I know Wales isn't a city. :) I'd wouldn't mind Wales because of Harlech, Pembroke and all the other castles. I'd find it cool to stand where William Marshal did. Although I'd have to move around a bit.

Why am I coming? Well, I can. :)
Why only one city? Finances mostly. I can get a flat or a long-stay for better rates at a hotel. Also, I think 3 months is long enough to get a pretty good feel for a place to determine if you want to stay longer or move along.

In that case can I suggest somewhere like Birmingham, it might not be a great city, but it central to England, and right on hub of the Motorway network, the UK isn't big by US standards so you should be able to travel to several other interesting places each weekend. Manchester or Liverpool would also do if you wanted to be focused more on the North as you could get up to Cumbria, Scotland or across to Wales or down to London in half a day (or an hour or so for Cumbria/Wales).

I'd like to spent a few months in Paris. What I've seen of it is really great and I'd love the chance to explore it properly. Either that or (almost) anywhere in Germany - never been and I'm curious to see what life's like over there.

I'd strongly suggest Leigh Park, in the outskirts of Havant in the UK. Depressing, dreary, scary and generally horrible. Few months of that and wherever you come from would seem like paradise on earth! :)

The Donut-Sausage Is Watching You, miscreant! :p Worship the Donut!

O Donut-Saucisse, tu es si grand!
Ton oeil sans cesse surveille
De la fac, tout les étudiants
Vraiment, quelle merveille!
Planté sur ton rond-point
Tel un moai de Rapa Nui
Sous le soleil qui luit
Tu brilles d'un éclat carmin!
Donut-Saucisse, toujours vigilant,
Dieu ancien venu du fond des temps
Devant l'UM2, tu rêves et attends
Qu'arrive la fin des temps.

I wonder why nobody tried to paint the donut in brown and parts of the sausage in yellow :)

At least it can be considered as art, unlike the stupid "Les limites insaisissables" in huge red letters on the new building just before the LIRMM.

When I studied there (IUP GMI), one of my friend wanted to organize the mustard party -- everybody brings a pot of mustard, and if enough is gathered, it would be poured over the "sausage" part.

There are lots of silly "art pieces" throughout the tramway's line. The only one I like are the glass chairs, 'cause you can sit on them, but they're often broken by vandals...

So, how much French would I have to butcher before they felt comfortable speaking English to me in France?

Am I talking a semester at the local junior college? Or Teach Yourself series? :)

I've actually got a pretty good ear for languages and try to know a little of the native language, if nothing else but the niceties. And I may be from Texas, but I leave the drawl behind..... :)

They probably wouldn't, regardless of how much effort you put into it ;).

jgbrowning: I'd recommend London / Amsterdam / Berlin (if you dig big cities), otherwise, try France (along the southwest coast, really nice there) or maybe Switzerland (let's say ... Zürich).

Fun city...good pubs...decent cultural scene...easy 1/2 day drive to lots of cool places...easy weekender trip to Galway for music festival...quick ferry ride to N. Wales to take in the splendor and wonder of the North Wales castles (Beaumaris, Conwy, Harlech, Caernarfon, Denbigh and Rhuddlan - www.castlewales.com)...the home of Guinness...some really cute women...
