My groups didn't think so, and all used it once we had access to it.

The OG 1e monk was just too weak overall; it was that d4 HD IMHO. Even with 2 HD at level 1... the monk just couldn't hang on the front lines.


Yeah, and if you used the Thieve's combat table, the DMG later changed it to the Cleric's.

Definitely agree about the weakness of the PHB monk. My thoughts about the perhaps a little OP-edness of the revised monk are very old, and so I haven't tested their validity recently. They might also be based on comparisons to thieves and fighters rather than clerics and MUs!
