Look who made the big time

No.

i love the game. and i'm not ashamed to admit it.

I love strawberry twizzlers, but I don't feel the need to announce it every other post.

It's irritating and it gets old. Find a new schtick. Please.

Any game can be the best

we all know Original D&D (1974) is the only true game. All the other editions are just a poor imitation of the real thing. :D

I think even the worst piece of **** pretending to be game writing can be the best/most fun if you have the right group of people.

I remember one late night when I was working at a summer camp that we ended up playing duck, duck, gray duck. (or goose for those of you born in strange less enlightend places :D ) Yeah it was really late, but the point is that we had a lot of fun acting like little kids.

So I think that questions of what game is best and other such will always boil down to personal opinion. (and yeah games can be better edited or have less errata, but it's a game, it should be about the fun.)

Ok, rant off,

On the other hand, early D&D was based on pretty much nothing, roleplay-wise. I'm willing to forgive an aweful lot of shortcomings for that. Anything else is like saying Edison contributed nothing to modern life because he only invented the incadencent light rather than flourescent and the phonograph rather than the CD.
Word. Ditto. Me-too. Well, you get the idea. :D

I don't think anyone begrudges diaglo his opinion on the matter. It is just worth noting that he is a johnny one-note with little else to say most of the time.

Every other post he puts up is basically the same "OD&D is the true game, all others are pale imitiations" line. You would think that after years of posting the exact statement over and over again, he would realize that his opinion has been noted and ignored, and find something else to say.

Imagine being told you're not playing AD&D because you use a supplement by Judges' Guild!

(snip)

The d20 era, allowing other companies such a huge amount of access to D&D, seems to me to be a 180 degree turn from the position Gygax took.

It's worth pointing out though that it doesn't seem to have been until after Gygax left TSR that the TSR lawyers started threatening lawsuits against other companies (and even fan websites!) for publishing D&D-related product. The idea that you could use copyright & trademark law to prevent the publication of materials for use with 'your' game seems to be a much more recent idea, and one which WotC certainly still subscribes to. The Gygaxian era seems much more innocent in retrospect, to an outside observer - if anyone knows differently I'm prepared to be corrected.

I'm noting that this is turning into a Diaglo smack-down thread in a hurry.

DUDE! the English language (and therefore Canada) had the goose first! Your "Grey Duck" is a pale imitation of the first edition of the game!

;) :D

P.S. you spelt grey wrong ;)
