I think Gary's bad reputation was due mostly to a smear job that TSR was pushing at the time
I think a bad rep, if it can be said to exist, does so because:
1) Of articles in the Dragon that exhibited a sort of my-way-or-the-highway attitude regarding playing variations of the rules.
2) Fans of Gygax who are a bit too strident in their defense. Now I agree that Gygax doesn't deserve everything thrown his direction (and have even stepped in myself when some goob of RPGnet says something blatantly vitriolic and innacurate), a small body of fans who see Gygax's words as law are extremely irritating.
Reviled might be a bit strong wording, I would agree, though. Most hardcore D&D players (IME) recognize Gygax as the inventor of their favorite passtime, even if they don't agree that the direction he would have taken the game would have been one that they would have stuck with for the long haul.
