I assume it's because a) they now know that pushing the button was done in order to prevent a catastrophic buildup of electromagnetic energies that are seemingly caused by geothermal activities, and b) Locke's failure to keep pushing the button led to those energies exploding and taking the hatch with it.
And who the heck would want to like on a hot sandy beach when there is a nice hatch with electricity and running water just sitting there unoccupied?
A couple of reasons (whether or not they were sufficiently sound is arguable). A) being on the beach is a better way of being found by rescue parties than being in a hatch and/or centrally located on the island (such as in the nice compound of the Others). B) The only hatches that are currently still operating are much further from the beach and may be in questionable condition (the Pearl station didn't look like it had much in the way of room/accomodations; the Arrow didn't seem in great shape when the front tail section survivors were found there. The Swan and the Looking Glass are both currently blown to smithereens.)
Heck, I'd rather live in the cave. BTW-Who were those dead bodies in the caves back in S1?
I believe they were just determined to be the survivors of another plane crash on the island from several decades ago.
