As I said in the first post:

48 - 6 = 42, +1 for Aaron (Claire's baby, AKA "Turnip-head") = 43... although, I guess Aaron isn't really a "survivor" of the plane crash.

It all really depends upon when the "48" count was taken, and whether or not you include the guy who was sucked into the engine, the Pilot, and Aaron... As with many things, it all depends upon how you look at it!
