LotR-TTT, Gospel Therefrom

Here's that quote from the appendices:

"It was said by Gimli that there are few dwarf-women, probably no more than a third of the whole people. They seldom walk abroad except at great need. They are in voice and appearance, and in garb if they must go on a journey, so like to the dwarf-men that the eyes and ears of other peoples cannot tell them apart. This has given rise to the foolish opinion among Men that there are no dwarf-women, and that the Dwarves 'grow out of stone'."

Obviously, if non-Dwarves "cannot tell [male and female dwarves] apart", then the Dwarf women have beards. Q.E.D.

Well!

I finally got to see The Two towers, and what a delight it was....especially when Gimli confirmed for all what I had long asserted. Here is the approximate quote: "Female dwarves look so much like the male ones that people usually mistake them for males." There it is for all who doubted. Female dwarves do have beards

With considerable satisfaction,
Gary

Wrong! You superannuated mangler of sentence structure. Gimli was revealing the fact that lady dwarfs are just as butt-ugly as the guys. This being the true reason for their decline in population. And for the invention of the female dwarf's chin wig. As well as the near universal criminalizing of shaving among dwarfs.

("If we have to consumate this marriage, could you wear a disguise?")

Olgar Shiverstone & Geoffrey,

Thanks for the enlightment:)

Muthusmage, go sit on your thumb, you dwarf-wannabe! Okay, seriosuly, Alan, that was a funny post, damn you!

Heh, Gary

Just so! I borrowed them from the same myth that Tolkien used for his, but I confess to tossing in a bit of Walt disney in my take on those stumpy ale-swillers ;)

SNIP

With grinning regards,
Gary

It pleases me greatly to know that the master of the game considers Disney a good dwarf reference.

I always wanted them to sing the Heigh Ho song for a NPC encounter but to make it work I would have to sing it in Drwaven and my voice is bad enough in English as it is.

Q: What did the dwarves sing as they walked past the ladies of the evening randomly rolled up from the 1e DMG's "Wandering Prostitute" Table?

A: "Hi ho, hi ho, hi ho hi ho hi ho..."

Err... I'll shut up now. :D

 After 20 years of playing D&D, I finally convinced my wife to try it out. She's been playing with our group for the last 2 years. Her current character in the game I DM is a female dwarf. I'm thinking that her house rule on this one will have to win. :D

Secretly, I always believed they shaved their beards before they went out in public. Thanks Col.

I've always liked the Discworld take on it, where the decades long courtships of dwarven couples mostly revolve around finding out if the prospective mate is the gender you're hoping for.

Why else do you think dwarf men drink so much ale?
:)

what do you mean? sometimes you just need a nice bear that you can just get a nice hold on and....

hmmm, maybe that is why they drink a lot

Ale, helping the dwarven population since 505 DR
