The screenwriter was quoting Tolkien.

Part of the book "The Lord of the Rings" appeared in the movie "The Lord of the Rings". Heartfelt tribute!

Just for the sake of argument, considering all of the words of JRRT not quoted by the screenwriter, why would that particular passage be chosen? Do you suppose that there is a possibility the fellow played D&D, knew of the "contraversy," and so included the particular statement by Gimli as a sort of insider joke? thet would be a tribute of sorts.

I am not stating this as factual, only postulating it as something that might be so. It isn't really very important either way...

Cheers,
Gary

Well, I think that in fact, it is not only possible, but very probable. I'm almost sure that the screenwriter is a gamer, or at least he has been.

I can't fault that reasoning, as I know a lot of the younger creative folks in entertainment, and computer gaming, have a D&D gaming background ;)

You mean she. Primary screenwriters were Fran Walsh (PJ's significant other) and Phillippa ... (forgot her last name). PJ was involved a lot of course, but Fran & Phillippa did the majority of the writing.

Now there's nothing in the FotR commentary that indicates that they're gamers, but then there's nothing that indicated the aren't, either. Guess we'll have to wait for the extended release DVD of TTT for the writer commentary.
