I got a chuckle out of that scene. I always took it as an homage to D&D.

The material was adapted from a paragraph in Part III of Appendix A of Lord of the Rings. I hardly think that Tolkien, published in 1954, could have been making a tribute to D&D, which was published in 1973.

Darn!

A lot of fun and interesting posts, but not one wail of outrage

Seems to me that some enterprising mages need to make up potions of depilatory sort to make the situation with the dwarven population more fertile...

Tolkien's appendix in the Return of the King mentions that it is almost impossible to tell the difference between Male and Female Dwarves (strongly implying, if not outrate stating that female dwarves are bearded).

Outlaw, yoou might be correct, for I don't recall JRRT ever having Gimli say anything of that nature in the actual story. If it is a tribute to D&D, the writer had a great sense of humor :D

"Barak Khazad! Khazad ai menu!"

Great, the dwarves (and their axes) are upon us... ;-b

Seriously, though, this is the first time I have choked because I was laughing so hard at reading a thread (this from an avowed dwarf-PC man) - all my PCs over the last 10 years or so have been dwarves - in fact, all my gamer friends, family included, remarked, "dude, how did they get you to play Gimli?" It was EXACTLY as I have portrayed dwarves. :)

Great job guys!

Just don't come up with something this hilarious when I'm at work. I might get fired.

"It was said by Gimli that there are few dwarf-women, probably no more than a third of the whole people. They seldom walk abroad except at great need. They are in voice and appearance, and in garb if they must go on a journey, so like to the dwarf-men that the eyes and ears of other peoples cannot tell them apart. This has given rise to the foolish opinion among Men that there are no dwarf-women, and that the Dwarves 'grow out of stone'."
Okay, so now we've established that dwarven women have beards. But given the quote above, the question is now: do they have breasts?

Under all that hair, who knows? Maybe they just have patches of skin that ooze milk like marsupials... eeewwww... dwarves with pouches...

One of the female players in my game wants to play a dwarf next for her next character, inspired by Gimli in TTT. She's even been explicit in saying that she wants her (female) dwarf to have a beard.

However, this is a Shadow of the Spider Moon campaign, where all dwarves shave their heads and beards as a sign of mourning for their lost world. This means that she is proposing to play a bearded, bald, female dwarf! I shudder at the thought.

They meant screenwriter.

The screenwriter was quoting Tolkien.

Part of the book "The Lord of the Rings" appeared in the movie "The Lord of the Rings". Heartfelt tribute!
