LOVE the New Covers!

I like most of the non-core-books ones. The ones shown today seem much more vibrant and feel like they draw you into the book. The ones for the PHB, DMG, and MM seem drab and boring by comparison.

The 'dude' on the cover of H2 looks very similar to the one on H3. At first, I thought they were the same, but one inspection, the one on H2 has a muzzle with fangs instead of a mouth. Also appears to be furry, and its horns are slightly different.

What is it? I don't think its either tiefling or dragonborn.
For that matter, what is on H3? (there are two more in the background as well.)
These are tieflings, I think.

I like both pieces, but they seem too similar to each other, both the art in general and the character/monster in specific.

Both the Character Record Sheet and the DM's Screen Covers rock, especially the DM's Screen! But, what's up with the horned character fetish?! That's just got to go. It was bad enough we get two horned characters on the PHB, now we see them on two others in the adventure line?! Well three actually, if you count the helmet the guy on H1 is holding... Seriously, we have Orcus on the MM, Tieflings on this, tieflings on that. I thought people wanted to bring D&D more into the mainstream, NOT get people thinking we're a bunch of devil worshipers again, geez!
Plus, there's the lack of variety argument. Yeah, Yeah, tiefling is one of the new PH races, but so are Eladrin and Dragonborn.

P.S. - not condoning my like or dislike of any of the new races, just trying to make a couple of points :)

I love most of the covers, but I still loathe that white "title bar". The adventures with that translucent effect are pretty rad, though, I just wish they'd done that for the other books as well - it makes the space a lot less "empty".

The variants with the black title bar (posted here when thPHB/DMG/MM covers were seen first) would also be a way to go, but with that translucent effect, the covers are *really* cool and don't look "empty" any more.

I hope that the later books are just early mock-ups and will be changed (a la the adventure ones), because otherwise, I'll need to replace the covers on my own... :heh:

Cheers, LT.

Best I can tell, only one of the two has horns. Does the female have some small ones?

WAR already clarified that the female has decorations in her hair shaped like swords, and they give the impression of horns when the image is a smaller size. She's human.

As for the covers, I think the Character Sheet one should be the one for the PHB, but otherwise they're all fine.

I also like the record sheet (party figthing dragon) and dm screen (fire giant with big dogs). Which makes me wonder why they are on second tier products.

Overall, I like the art. It is contemporary without having some of the issues that 3ed had (and when the sorcerer is introduced, I hope he remembers to keep his shirt on).

And it feels a little bolder. D&D art should not be understated.

I like it, too. Didn't really take a good look at the record sheets, I just snickered at the anitiquated idea of buying offical record sheets and moved on. But the fire giant (and those are hell hounds, I'm betting) is awesome. Someone pointed out in that other thread, though that the FRCS art is recycled and may not be the actual cover.

To me, the new covers really give off an example of the amazing and fun content waiting inside. In comparison, many of the older core covers were too dark and uninspiring. The fake tome graphic gave the books more of a reference guide feel to them, kind of like a fantasy encyclopedia.

I think the white space on the title bar is used to good effect. It allows the book to present itself in a recognizable manner from farther away than the older darker covers of 3.5. It also efficiently states that this book is for Dungeons & Dragons and the artwork draws an individual in to learn more.

The white space has a nice effect, hence I prefer the "translucent" white space to the black one on the. But just "white" without any texture looks... I dunno, empty.

Though I love the direction of full-art covers, yeah - it's only my little beef with the totally white and blank bar. Translucent is much better, not only because it's less empty - it shows more of the pretty cool artwork!

Cheers, LT.
