[LPF] About a Cow

Autumn climbs up the net; it doesn't go all the way to the door and she is forced to reach for the edge and pull herself up. Her first view of the room gives the impression that kobolds do not come here. There is dust and dirt but very little of the debris and general mess that has been common in their living quarters.

As Aelspeth pulls herself up to join Autumn, they hear a sound. At first it is a quiet rattle as if someone jiggled a pan. Then it happens again, and again, but louder and prolonged. When Rak'tan pulls himself up into the room the sound can be clearly heard by everyone, even Arradon below.

Rak'tan looks around but sees nothing that might indicate that the apprentice he is seeking is here or has ever been in this room. The rattle happens again but this time it is accompanied by a faint glimmer: an image of commonfolk working in a kitchen, pans rattling on tables and in the fireplace. The image is oriented so that the people are standing on the actual floor, perpendicular to the group and a bit disorienting.

Suddenly, pans, people, knives, kitchen debris fly from the floor to the ceiling (wall to wall, by the characters' experience) pelting everyone with phantom images. It doesn't feel like a phantom as a turnip strikes Rak'tan a glancing blow on the cheek. He turns and his armor manages to block the rest of the debris.

Aelspeth and Autumn aren't so lucky. Aelspeth is pelted by a flight of knives and receives numerous cuts as they pass. One stabs deep into her arm. Autumn is hit by a heavy pot and splashed with boiling water. And then silence. The images and noise vanish though the injury caused by the phantoms do not. Aelspeth and Autumn are shocked by the suddenness and violence of the phantom and stand in uncertainty a moment before they can muster up their will to act.

After a moment of silence, a pot begins to rattle...

[sblock=OOC]Cool encounter! When I post later, is there a Knowledge I can roll to A) recognize if this is a type of creature or just a haunt; B) recognize how the haunt functions; and/or C) recognize how to disbelieve and/or destroy the creature/haunt?[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]Knowledge (Arcana) or (Religion) would give more information on the nature of the phenomenon. Perception or Knowledge (History) might give more information about the event that caused the phenomenon.

It is about 35 feet if one were to jump through the door to the floor below (a bit less if you hang and drop). It would be possible to jump into the net and avoid the floor if you trusted it to catch you.[/sblock]

[section]Autumn Foxfire - Natural Mystic

Autumn absolutely yelps in pain as the water scalds her body. She can't really focus on what she just saw; the pain was much too great. She sees the pot start to move and reflexively tenses her arm up and lets fly a bolt of fire at the pot. The shot goes nowhere near it's intended target because of the distracting sting of the boiling water across her whole body.

[sblock=OOC] I'm back! [/sblock]

Seeing the strange occurrence Rak'Tan decides to attempt to tell his lesser armored companions to get behind him so he might have a chance to protect his newfound allies.

The vision seems to be illusion though the damage done is painfully real. Autumn's action is reflexive but her firebolt flies wide of any of the vanishing phantoms. Aelspeth can tell it is not illusion, however, and it some form of lingering haunt similar to a ghost. It can be quieted temporarily with holy magics but putting the haunt to rest requires something more permanent, usually tied to its creation and she hasn't figured that out yet.

Rak'tan attempts to shield Aelspeth and Autumn from the haunt as they consider what they've seen so far: kitchen paraphernalia and people falling from the floor to the ceiling, the buried tower on its side. This was more than just a tower collapsing, this was much more violent, as if the tower fell from a great height.

There were tales of flying castles long, long ago but they all vanished before the current age. The thought that those castles might have fallen from the sky is horrifying.

The pots rattle again and there is a flicker of faces appearing and disappearing. The speed with which the haunt is manifesting is longer this time. Perhaps it takes time to manifest again after expending its strength.

Aelspeth Noromiel, Novice Conjurer

Aelspeth's face is devoid of emotion as she looks down at the massive boning knife that stabbed deep into her arm, just below the elbow, its tip poking out the other side. An alien buzzing sensation crawls around inside her skull. She is struck with some sort of awe, yet she feels remote, somehow distant from the room. She raises her uninjured arm, touches the edge of the wound. Something slippery and red smears all around beneath her touch. How queer.

Darwin, huddled inside the sash on the wizard's back, is assaulted by alternating waves of pain, fear, and nausea. The empathic link between him and his mistress transfers what the elf would feel, were she not in tremendous shock. He jumps up onto Aelspeth's shoulder and looks down at the wound. There's so much blood...! he thinks to himself. Despite his limited ability to communicate, he possesses childlike intelligence. As any child who witnesses gut-twistingly gruesome wounds, he turns to authority for reassurance. The spider monkey shrieks and boxes Aelspeth's ears to jar her from her eerie trance.

Still flat of affect, the wizard looks around the room. Each time she moves her head, her vision swims momentarily and then settles. She wonders absently if the Material Plane is confused. No, wait, that doesn't make sense. Shock. You're in shock, Girl. Ok, the tower's haunted. Where's the epicenter of the disturbance? She yawns sleepily and says, "Leita syn," as she traces the sign of visions in front of her face. Her eyes flash with light and then glow a pupil-less white. She continues to look around without moving.

[sblock=OOC]Standard: Cast detect magic. I know there probably won't be any lingering spell auras or anything but wonder if there are any items in the room that could have been valuable or significant to the tower's former inhabitants. Those kinds of items are often magical. I mean, I'm sure it's not just this room that's haunted but I think it would make the most sense in Aelspeth's shoes to try to resolve the problem as fast as possible.

I've updated my mini stats below but I'm in a growing line for level-up approvals. Let me know if I should revert to my old stat block until approved.[/sblock]

There are no magical auras within this upper room beyond what the group carried in with them. Aelspeth maintains her vision until the pots rattle again and the haunts start to flicker in and out of existence but the magics reveal nothing to her even when staring right at the visual manifestation. By the time she makes that determination it is already several seconds beyond the length of time during which the haunt first manifested after Autumn's entering the room. It seems likely to Aelspeth that it will manifest again soon.

As if to emphasize that point the pots rattle from several locations around the room before falling still again.

Please, keep Aelspeth's updated stats. There is no need to reverse them. I'll try to get to approving the characters in this game as soon as I can unless Aura beats me to it.

Also, I've assumed Aelspeth will take the time to try to glimpse any lingering auras that might be present. After about 15 seconds she gets no information from the spell.

Ealt, I didn't intend to sideline Arradon. This encounter came with a timeline and the first manifestation occurred before Arradon climbed up into the room.

Aelspeth: hp 8/18
Arradon: hp 15/18
Autumn: hp 9/16
Rak'tan: hp 13 [4 non-lethal]
