I think this is very interesting. I'm not in favor of the latest content changes to the d20 license but this product might be a good acid test of the license agreement. Seems to me that, based on the license and what they did to BoEF, they should clamp down on this one too. Otherwise, it just kind of screams that the changes were designed specifically to suppress BoEF.
Hey, I'm in favor of this kind of satirical work. (I'm also in favor of adult-themed materials aimed at adult consumers or religiously-challenging materials as well.) But I'm also in favor of WotC treating its licenced 3rd party producers even handedly.

Didn't this go to press before the changes to the d20 license were made public? I know I saw a copy at one of the LGS at least a couple of weeks ago, if not quite a bit before that... Of course, with the lack of sleep I've had over the last two months I could just be blurring everything together ;)

It doesn't matter if it went to print before the new d20STL changes or not. The changes are retroactive, meaning there is no grandfather clause. If Wotc decides Mongoose is in violation (which by letter of the license they are), it doesn't matter if the book was printed yesterday or six months ago; it will be subject to recall and destruction. The book should serve as a litmus test to the changes. It will be interesting to see if anything develops as a result.

IANAL and all that, but the way the law works if WotC *doesn't* pull the license from it, then tries to pull from another product in the future aren't they endangered. The party can say 'Look! They didn't pull Macho Women With Guns, but they pulled our product!' and have a legal leg to stand on.

Let's see ... I remember an aerial combat supplement titled Bat-Winged Bimbos From Hell, and my all-time favorite, the vehicular combat supplement, Renegade Nuns On Wheels. The artwork on the cover of that one could have been pulled straight from SJ Games' Kung Fu CB Mamas on Wheels Vs. The Motorcycle Aztec Wrestling Nuns, if that game had actually existed ...

And the best-named adventure book for any game ever...

Oh, it's better than that. First of all, the new D20 System Guide states explicitly that WotC is the final arbiter of what is acceptable--if they say it's ok, it's ok, other statements in the Guide notwithstanding. So, strictly speaking, they're not selectively enforcing the license, it's just a variable license. Second, since they are sole arbiters, they can also decide that MWWGD20 is ok because it's satire, not "adult content". Third, as i understand it, if they *did* find MWWGD20 infringing, there's no provision in the license for them demanding that Mongoose recalls/destroys MWWGD20. What there is is a provision for them to demand that Mongoose recall and destroy every D20 Logoed product they have ever printed, and never print any others--the license talks about losing the D20 System License not on a product-by-product basis, but on a company-wide basis. Of course, they could always dangle the threat of finding the company infringing if they don't recall that one book. But that's not what the license says.

Probably not. That's part of what the sole arbiter clause does for them--they don't have to answer to any higher standard, not even the standard of consistency. Be pretty hard on them in the court of public opinion, maybe, but you can't look at any existing book as precedent, because you don't know exactyl what elements they based their decision on, and they are empowered to change their mind at any time. Heck, as the license currently stands, they don't even have to stand by their decisions--strictly speaking, one guy at WotC could tell you the book is ok, and then later another could tell you it's infringing, and unless you'd gotten a formal legal license (above and beyond the D20STL) oking your product, you'd be up a crick.

I changed the title of the thread to seem less threatening... just to be on the safe side.

Hm... after reading more of the book, the only sexual thing in it is the Nookie skill... All of the art is so comical, it's very difficult to look at it in a sexual way...

Also, some of the occupations definitely give you some nifty things. My Exiles group will likely be making a jaunt to this world... D

I was not aware that women could be posessed by Machismo, but then again I'm not aware of many things. Like who is this person about to stab thundershot in the neck with a framing square.
