MAGIC Domain is Broken!

You don't have to know ALL the rules. Just all the rules that directly concern your PC.

If you don't, then the DM will have to look them up for you, possibly in the middle of a session. It's annoying.

Why? I'd rather see "broken" than "got the shaft"...
The term broken when talking games and balance means that the thing in question is so powerful that it breaks the mechanics of the game.

If you were to give a class an ability that allowed it to stack all like named bonuses, it would be broken.

I'd rather use broken too, but that's not what it means.

The ability to use Wizard Scrolls is one of the, if noth the, most powerful Domain ability given. All spellcasters need their primary attribute of 10 + spell level to cast the spell. That is true for scrolls as well as just casting. I think Wizards didn't reprint it by the Domain because they never thought it was needed.

If it were my game, I'd either adjust the stats of the PC, let him choose another domain, adjust the powers of the domain, or change the rule.

The goal of the game is to have fun, not to play by the rules no matter what. It is not a competition.

It's not a compitetion, but the rules are there for a reason. How high do you alter the stat? Mage scrolls go up to 9th level. Do you grant him a 19 INt? Nice boost from his 12. There are plenty of ways he can increase his Int. Or switching out domains would be perfectly fine. But, this isn't some obscure rule. It's the same with all spellcasters, so I wouldn't be altering it just because he claims ignorance.

Also, if you're playing in the FRCS don't you have access to feats like Cosmopolitan, which would allow you to develop the Use Magic Device Skill and get a +2 bonus, together with a +2 synergy bonus (what cleric of Mystra wouldn't have 5 ranks of Spellcraft early on?)

That way, you can emulate ability score and cast those scrolls (with only a reasonable chance of casting the fireball on your own party... :) )

I think magic domain is designed for the smarter, less physical clerics. Ask the DM if you can downgrade your ST, DX, CN in exchange for some more IN (which will be nice for your skill points, too.)

Good luck, and have fun!

Granted Power: Use scrolls, wands, and other devices with spell completion or spell trigger activation as a wizard of one-half
your cleric level (at least 1st level).

Doesn't 'as a wizard' imply using int?

Granted I didn't know about scrolls needing a certain int... and I play mages regularly.

You're forgetting another cool thing...

You can cast Identify for free. No drinking pearl infuses wine for you. Each casting is 100gp, so you'll be saving yourself a couple hundred gp using your domain Identify rather than the arcane version.

Huh. Nice.

Guess we'll be taking our gear to the local temple instead of the mage school for identification from now on...
