Magic Item: Possible Brain Bender?

In one campaign I got hold of a +1 throwing returning vorpal wounding kukri, at 4th level. The DM never intended us to acquire that weapon, but the BBEG threw it at my monk, who finally got some use out of his Snatch Arrows feat. :)

I'm currently working up an NPC for an upcoming Ravenloft game and as I'm putting together her gear and magic items I'm wondering if the following magical sword is a possible brain bender: Thundering Shocking Burst Undead Bane Greatsword +5.

So, what are your thoughts on this one?

I like it. I would suggest adding keen to it as well. Makes it a +10 equivelent, but the wielder will get alot more milage out of the thundering and shocking bust enhancments. :cool:

That a +9 weapon is generally unavailable in Ravenloft. Perhaps in Azalin's realm before it went poof. Did this NPC have this with him from a high magic campaign setting and get sucked into Ravenloft?

No. Born and raised in Barovia. She has been around for awhile though. She is currently 54 years of age.

The character already has Improved Crit., which doesn't stack with keen.

but with the undead bane ability the crit damage will apply to them as well.

Umm, your crit-like energy enhancements will apply to the undead whenever your would have gotten a crit anyway. You don't need undead bane for that.

As it stands, your weapon will do the following to undead:

Non-crit = 2d6 + 1d6 (electricity) + 2d6 (bane?) + 7 (magic enhancement).
Crit (used when you would have crit if it weren't undead) = 2d6 + (1d6+1d10) (electricity) + 1d8 (sonic) + 2d6 (bane) + 7 (magic enhancement)

If you dropped shocking burst in favor of holy, you'd get this:

Non-crit = 2d6 + 2d6 (holy) + 2d6 (bane) + 7 (magic en.)
Crit = 2d6 + 2d6 (holy) + 2d6 (bane) + 1d8 (sonic) + 7 (magic en.)

Personally, I'd ditch the Thundering enchantment for something else.

Despite the official ruling, Improved Critical SHOULD stack with Keen. Sean K. Reynolds has an excellent article on his website that breaks down why.
