Magic item price: Magical Thief's Tools!

This thread should go back in the Rules forum.

Hey now -- Even if you disagree, I'm pretty sure you could request this and not be so brusque. You make baby Piratecat cry. ;)

In any case, we've had a chat in the Mod forum about whether new magic item discussions go in house rules or rules. We agree with you that this sort of a thread involves the pricing rules, so it should be a Rules thread. A discussion of a new magic item that involves the item's abilities would most likely be in House Rules.

We'll stick to that definition in the future. My apologies for any confusion -- having never discussed this with our moderators before, I take responsibility for the misunderstanding.

Yoow-za. Sorry 'bout that.

I must admit, my previous interactions with some of the other posters about "pricing magic items" had colored my response.

I'm happy to hear that this topic is fair game for rules discussions now. No apologies necessary from you, PC - that's my job, this time 'round!

Well, I apologize too, having done the initial move. It's a good topic, anyway, just one that kind of falls on the border between the two forums. I was out of town yesterday, and so I asked PC to move it if folks thought it needed moving; thanks for doing so, Piratecat!

See, I just don't get that. Why is this "house rules" for some posters? I've read the relevant passages in the DMG (specificly, p 282 in the DMG 3.5e), and they say nothing about that.

Anyone care to enlighten this poor befuddled soul? :)

Nail and all, I thought you might all be amused to find out that the person's character who originally requested to purchase these buffed up theives tools decided not to purchase them when he heard the price.

No I'm not the guilty party, I'm just another one of the players in that group.

Well, what was the price offered vs effect given?

IE what was decided on in this game?

Guilty DM here...

OK, I admit it now...I'm the guilty DM that first posed this question to Nail...I didn't realize a "simple" question was going to result in making PC cry... :(

Anyway, I believe ZB missed part of the conversation. The PC is going to have the tools made, at a price of 8,750 gp ( what can I say...they're in Silverymoon, where everything is better quality, but more expensive ).

The reason he didn't have them on the latest excursion was it was going to take a few days to have them created, and the PC would have had to go adventuring without his lockpicks if he chose to have his existing one's enchanted. So, he bought a second set, and is having them enchanted while he is away killing nasties.

Final product ends up having +5 to both Open Lock and Disable Device.

Thanks to everyone who put in their .02 worth!

Z
