Magic Vestment on a shirt = "Armor"

I'd have no problem allowing for a "Shirt +5" or for that matter, a "Shirt of Heavy Fortification". It takes up the "armor" space on a character, and shouldn't be that different from what other characters are using...

Note on DMG p. 176 that there are specific separate slots for:
- 1 suit of armor
- 1 vest, vestment or shirt

Actually, I think you'd use Create Wonderous Item to make armored vestments using Magic Vestment.
You are saying to create a whole new item from scratch.

I am saying to take an existing item and change only it's slot and flavor text.

Yet further proof that a shirt is not armor except for the purposes of the Magic Vestment spell; which is exactly why they spelled out the exception.

If a shirt is armor, then monks cannot wear shirts without losing their special abilities

Wouldn't bother most of the monks I've seen played... they all seem to go for the pants-and-a-headband look :)

Yeah, uh... that's why I (not kigmatzomat) posted it.

Sorry. The first one was a mistake (lazy cut-n-paste) and I was just kidding with the second. I'll let it die now.

I'm really surprised though that none of the many monks I've seen played have ever thought of getting Magic Vestment put on their outfits. Seems like it should be standard operating procedure until you get some bracers or what not.

Well, I'll let you off, then :)

The monks I've seen are happy with Mage Armor.

I've seen it...in 2nd edition, no less...along with Sandals of Elvenkind to boot.

Indeed. Not only does mage armor have the benifits of being a force effect, but by the time this is better than mage armor (15th level) I'd expect most monks to have +5 or higher bracers, anyway.
