Make me want to play NWN...

By the way... I just finished it yesterday evening!

I don't know what to say about the last fight...
It took me at least half an hour to figure out how to damage Morag, but in the meantime... she wasn't basically able to harm myself at all! That was very weird

:)

Hello all :)

Just a quick answer.
(I am at work actually, but I HAD to response when I read this thread)

I was scared after reading this thread...
It seems you think NWN is for the Hack'n slash players...?!?!????
No, it is the computer game that is the closest to a PnP Roleplay experience!

Actually, I played BG, Fallout, NWN... but before NWN, I didn't know
what PnP or the DnD rules are.
I didn't realize that there is a game (PnP-D&D) that uses these rules and that this is a computer conversation of these rules!
After I played PnP-like NWN, I bought all the core books and lots of other DnD and PnP stuff... I joined this site because of NWN!

Some comments:

"...but maybe NWN has to be played online to be really fun?"
Oh yes! If you ever can try it in multiplayer... DO IT :)
(looking for NWN-RP players/DMs? -> www.neverwinterconnections.com
There, you will find young and old PnP-Players who can't find a PnP group
and now play NWN (beside PlayByMail etc))

"...if you don't like hack'n slash,... NWN isn't for you"
This is actually wrong! (if you're able to play online)

"It's mainly a 'go online and beat the hell out of some monsters with your buddies' game."
I have to disagree!

"ummm...back to the point. Unless you like big online hack-fests, NWN isn't for you."
Again, I have to disagree, it is just not true!
(I play NWN with people that roleplay(-ed) D&D/PnP for more than 20 years and I am sure, they DON'T like hack-fests... but play NWN)

I play and DM NWN campaigns in a very PnP way.
Sometimes we play three hours or more without a single fight!
I enjoy scheduled campaign sessions with small RP groups.
(5,6 people and 1,2 DMs)
I don't like the Persistant Worlds,.. there you will find a lot of hack'n slash IMO.
(but not in DMed Roleplaying Sessions!)

The PCs/DMs roll skill/ability checks and response to the roll.
When we rest, it takes time and we will advance the clock.
(not like "normal" NWN,.. fight, rest, fight, rest)

Story depth depends on the DM/Builder who created the adventure you play.
(Yes you can play other modules than the Original Campaign)
NWN is a tool to create your own adventures and play them online
and not a single-player game IMO

So if you are looking for a different experience with NWN
(different than the experiences that were described in this thread)
try www.neverwinterconnections.com and join a game.

There will be the third NWN Online convention at the end of this year/start of the next year.

Kind regards,
Smithy

I actually enjoyed the story but combats have become boring after I reached higher levels. And I tried to rest as little as possible, only when I had used all my spells and I was seriously in need of healing :)

I downloaded the demo for NWN a couple of days ago, and I was pretty impressed. I started off with a badass human fighter because I didn't feel like messing around with stuff like spells while trying to get the feel for how the game itself played. I cranked the difficulty to D&D Hardcore immediately; I know this game is based on D&D, I know how D&D works, so I feel comfortable with that level of difficulty. Besides, I'm already somewhat used to the feel of a real-time D&D experience through the original Baldur's Gate. The only major difference I was expecting was a transition from 2e to 3e rules, and playing actual 3e games already prepared me for that.

I didn't bother with any of the recommended choices in the game. I chose the following stats for my fighter: Str 16, Dex 14, Con 16, Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 8, and interestingly enough, that was pretty close to the Recommended choices for point distribution. For feats I went right for Power Attack, Weapon Focus (greatsword), and Cleave. :] Man, it was so much fun Power Attacking and Cleaving those goblins senseless. The biggest disappointment was how short the demo was; when I got to the end, I was like "That's it?!". Bottom line: I was already interesting in checking this game out; now it's jumped up to the status of must have. :)

Never, and I mean never, hit the "package skills" or recommend buttons. They will always water your char down to average, and will always pick your last class and its text-book stat for the next level-up. Unless average is what you are after ;p. If you want a char to have char, whether strong or weak, you will need to pick them.

Well yeah, they're there for the newbies really. I know enough D&D that I can assign stats on my own.
