Making a high-level PC is hard!

This is a joke, right?

Does that really take that long? The hardest part is choosing the powers that match your concept. But it seems like it would be pretty quick to me. I could probably do it faster than I was able to type this post explaining the process.

Picking things is easy. Writing them all down is hard. And the multi-class feats are pretty tricky to optimize (I'm taking the cleric one followed by the one that let's you take a utility). Plus figuring out how feats and stats interact not to mention weapon choices.

Picking feats did take me about 15 minutes, but that's mainly a familiarity thing I guess. I also typed in a short 3-5 word description of each.

... the hell?
If you're going to play a 16th level character, you've got something like 13 powers, about 6 class abilities, and 2-3 racial abilities. You've also got 11 feats, and probably 5-6 magic items.

I for one would want all that on the character sheet with descriptions. I'm way past 2 hours now, but it would take less time next time. I'll post the pdf in another thread when I finish.

The current character has the following conditional modifiers:
  • +2 damage against bloodied.
  • heal 6 points of damage when drop something to zero
  • gain 10 points of temp hit points when drop something to zero
  • +2 to attack on opportunity attack.
  • When pushing or knocking prone opponent, do 6 points of damage
  • When dropped to zero or less, may spend an action point.
  • When spending an action point to gain an action, get +4 to all defenses
  • Second Wind is a minor action
  • When opponent moves you, you may move 1 space less.
  • If hit with combat challenge immediate, may push target 1
  • Combat Challenge
  • If miss, do 6 points of damage unless miss otherwise does damage anyways.
And that doesn't include any "powers", including magic item dailies.

And when I finish the magic items it will be a bit longer I'm guessing.

Bah. If you could play a wiz or fighter without writing all the spell and feat descriptions on your character sheet, you can do the same here.

Maybe. If 4e is to be faster than 3e. In 3e I had to look them up every time.

Your complaint is that making a high-level character is hard, not that playing a high-level character is hard. This is because you have made it hard for yourself, by undertaking to do something you somehow never felt the need to do before. And the main complaint about 4E at high levels (so far) is the stunted number of powers people have, not that they are overflowing with options.

I think that it's pretty awesome that you can fit every power and all the bits of your character with every bit of how they work on two sheets of paper (double sided), even at high level. I mean, that's amazing.

Well, not if you're a wizard or ritualist I guess. But, still.

One hour is nothing compared to what it used to take in 3.5. I had to limit all my characters to the main books + 2 splats just to keep things under control. I once made a 14th level wizard, and looked at over 20 splat books for spells... took me a week and a half.
