D&D 5E Making a side kick to an epic hero...

I have two real experiences with side kicks. The first one is mine:
- we were playing Dragonlance. I played a wizard, high int, red robe, etc. At one point we meet some gullys (stupid and weak dwarves) it just happend that I adopted one. The DM made me roll using the ad&d stats for gullys (I ended with Str 11 and con 8). He was an awesome NPC. I played it along with my wizard. He was always in the front line biting, even when he has a magical sword. He was awesome, but he was and NPC. We were playing ad&d then moved to 5ed.
- I was dming a pathfinder game and one player showed up with this: his character was a mad goblin. His tribe found the things of a dead human hero. He started using those stuff till he believed he was the hero and killed the whole tribe because he *is* a hero and should kill monsters. Then started his adventures. He get the leadership. So in his travels he met a evil bard goblin, this new one believes the first is a powerful goblin hero or something and write using pop and bad drawings the deeds of the hero. Her performance was offensive dancing and singing.

Having said that, I don't think that kind of side kick could be a fun full time character. I have these ideas:
- a protective brother (you know, the tank)
- a cleric of knowledge whose mission is to record the tales of great heros to inspire people.
- a wizard who needs something from the hero (maybe he collect his blood anytime he is wounded)
- a warlock whose patron needs the hero for some dark plan. Maybe the patron want the hero to grow powerful to take his body.
- the hero saved a wolf from some hunters, now the human companion of the animal is loyal to the hero.
- a paladin who was friend of the hero's father and want to protect (tank) or guide him (support)
- a thief that everybody wants to kill but can't because he is with the hero. This is the silly roguish-bad turns good character.
