Wow!

That's like a 20+ hour double post!
Is that even possible? :) Huh.

Re: Racial levels
Canis paints the picture nicely. Let's see if I can muddy the waters a bit with an On-Topic example.

A "race level" comes from a generalist that hones and practices his racial tendencies. For a kobold, that might mean becoming more draconic, or more wary of big folk, or more capable with mechanisms and traps. The kobold would do this by tackling problems "the kobold way", rather than tackling them as a Fighter, Rogue, or Sorcerer.

As a kobold advances in "kobold-ness", he might gain extra Natural Armor, or perhaps usable claws, or an additional bonus to creating traps, or even a bonus to their dexterity. Maybe. Dunno....it would be fun to explore that.

Sorry, the forums crashed about the time I was posting it and I did not realize it had posted so I posted again today.

Eh, no biggie. It's actually not the longest I've seen here. Someone managed to double post exactly 24 hrs later, down to the minute, though that was before the upgrade.

Regardless, please forward me your work-in-progress if you're willing. The least I can do is read through it and offer my opinion (for whatever that's worth. :) )

Thanks.

...Since everything else is identical to v_4 this works for me.....
Good to know. :p :)

So this is what we'll go with, then. I was kinda hoping others might comment on it too....but since this is the House Rules forum, and everyone has their own house rules, I suspect high taffic is unlikely.

Re: Scent
Pro'ly another thread, eh? How about here.

The biggest thing that struck me about this conversation is the idea that "a race should be balanced with respct to its favored class". That's not something that has occured to me, in part because WotC hasn't acknowledged that design parameter. So I've come away from this thinking, "Huh. I hadn't thought of that."

FYI: It's in Savage Species. They call it the Acid Test and it's used throughout the book when trying to decide if a Level Adjustment is correct, too high or too low.

Basically, once you have your Race picked out, you estimate the Level Adjustment using a bunch of guidelines in the book. Then, you take a look at the ability score modifiers and use those to determine the "best" class for that race. Take the LA and add 1 level of this "best" class to the creature's HD and compare it to a generic, single-classed character of equal level. If the single-classed character is clearly inferior or superior to your 1st level Racial dude then the LA needs adjusting accordingly. Rinse and repeat until the two come out fairly equal and neither seems a clear winner.

I originally put this info in another thread but wanted to make sure you saw it, Nail.

Thanks.

Hmmm...didn't see this when I suggested my kobold idea. Basically, I leave the kobold pretty much alone, but change the rest of the world.

Version 6?

First, I make the kobold have favored class = fighter, not sorceror.
Then I forbid any non-kobold from taking fighter (or barbarian, except as NPC orc barbarians) as a class. Warrior replaces fighter in most cases.
Finally, I forbid any non-kobold from taking feats from the fighter bonus feat list. Kobold non-fighters can, but non-kobolds cannot (except as class abilities, like the ranger getting archery or twf feats).

I don't know if this is balanced or not. I was trying to reduce the role of the fighters and barbarians, and increase the kobold without changing it too much. But obviously this would not work for other campaigns. From a roleplaying point of view, I was thinking of giving kobolds more access to mithral, to make it easier to get wearable heavy armor and shields.
