Massive Damage Varient

This came up in another thread, and I though it was a neat idea:

A Massive Damage Check is triggered when an attack deals at least 50 Damage, with the DC being 10 + 1/per 10 points of damage, rounded down.

Thus, deal 52 damage and the DC is 15 (10 + [5x1] = 15. Deal 183 damage and the DC is 28.

The DC will be, at a minimum, 15 - which is the DC right now. Essentually this just adds +1 to the DC for every 10 points of damage over 50.

So, what do you think?

I can honestly say, I see no problem with it, but alas I have seen I think only one MDC since 3.0 came out and none since 3.5...I think that's mainly due to our groups style of play though. It would make so when the levels are high enough that the damage won't kill you anyway the save may not be a fail only on a one thing...which is always good, but if it dramatically raised the death rate in a game I would be afraid my players would lynch me. I kill too many PC's as is, or so they say. I've been working on it...hehe...going to MDMA meetings (Mean Dungeon Masters Anonymous). So I once bull rushed a PC off a 300 foot cliff...the others learned a valuable lesson about gravity.

"It's not the fall that kills you; it's the sudden stop at the end."

Personally, I've never seen ONE Massive Damage Save in my games but I think this allows it to scale a bit, while keeping with the core rules.

Now High Level/Epic Level Characters just might have to worry about rolling a 2 or 3 on a Fort Save ;)

Theres something along those lines in UA ;)

Strangely Enough...

The 3E orc with greataxe could crit up to a max of 42 hp damage...

That was pretty close to the 50 hp threshold.

Of course, odds for that damage total are LOW : 5% X % chance to hit (always relates to AC) X 8.5% (12 on a d12).... You don;t see it everyday ! :-)

Actually, it's worse -- x3 damage means the damage is rolled three times, not multiplied by 3, so you need another 2 1/12s in there: 1/20 * (hit chance) * 1/12 * 1/12 * 1/12.
