Look at comics!

Marvel's internal fan-rot is disguised by the fact that Marvel Studios has been shackled and brain-boxed by Disney, but in the comics... yeesh.
Man, American comics are such a damn oddity considering how much cultural impact the characters have...

On a regular month, Batman will sell less than 125 000 issues, with special months going up to 300 000 or so. Jujutsu Kaisen sold over 800 000 copies in march 2022.

And when a new Asterix comes out, it will usually sell around 1-1,5 million copies in its native French speaking market.

And neither of those other markets is dominated by two UNIVERSES the same way American comics are by DC and Marvel. Everybody else has multiple independent works and different kinds of stories.

n this case it is caster supremacy.

number 1 complaint in 3e is inbalance.
4e balances
a number of complaints in 4e is different forms of too balanced...
D&D would be better if it wasn't for Wizard fans :p

the funny part is if you look at starwars you will see "The prequals ruined it..." 20 years ago but now fans of the prequals say "The sequals ruined it" about the new trilogy... and as much as I will NEVER defend the choices made in any of the 3 trilogies (and all have there flaws) I can't help but wonder if starwars is around when I am 60 if a new story will ruin the sequals and people will look back on Rey fondly...

bringing this back to the reason for threads like this. I hope someday 4e will be that old edition they go back to for inspiration.
No, they won't go back. Because at this point, that would confuse the new generation of players, which, make no mistake, are the ones paying the bills around here.

And if they did, why the old Grognards might get their act together and create their own game, to compete with them!

Hmm...

That's because one Batman issue isn't all the Batman. Bats is EVERYWHERE. In any given year, ask yourself how many of his own books he has, including side stories, limited series, elseworlds projects, cameos, and company wide crossover events. And then toss in the animated projects (series and movies) and even the neverending line of live action movies....

And that's why the American comics scene is so large. Batman fans will buy books that Batman shows up in for two pages! It's a whole interconnected world of characters, and if there's one thing American fans love it's crossovers.

yeah animated and live action alone DC and Marvel dominate over any other stories right now.

That's still a pretty low readership.

You got like 125 000 hard core comics fans who buy everything and that industry seems to bend backwards to please that tiny core rather than try to attract larger audiences. DC and Marvel keep hiring fans who just want to reproduce the stuff they read as kids and nothing they try to get us invested in seems to stick.

And putting that aside, the whole continuous, multi-book, DC and Marvel universes are pretty much giant oddities compared to other large comic book traditions and everyone is too steeped in it to really think about it... comics fan act like it's the norm and that's just 'how comics are, lol'. Good ol' American Exceptionalism and Cultural Imperialism I guess :p

what is teh norm then?

Image wildstorm and many other try to have those worlds too they just don't get as many sales.

star trek has strange new worlds starting this week while Picard is ending it's season and Picard started as discovery was ending there season

The norm is not to have giant company wide universes :p especially not with event based giant stories constantly going on.
