Military, Simple, and Superior Weapon Groups?

Superior (renamed exotic ) does make sense with all the weapons listed save for the short sword and the whip. (bastard swords are the katanas of the west/europe basically)

With the renaming of all light thrown blades as 'shuriken', I'm a bit confused as to why they've previewed both 'bastard sword' and 'katana'.

Surely katana would have been a good enough name for the two versions of the exact same weapon.

Honestly, if we can have fun with "level" meaning several different things, we can probably handle "martial" power sources and "martial" weapons.

It ("military" weapons) does sound weird. The only other words I might use are "complex" and "trained", but even those are kind of weird as well.

Brad

Maybe "professional"?

I reckon it is only differentiated in the DDI character portrait so you can get the look of your weapons that you like.

"Basically" yes.
But katanas were, by far, of inferior quality.;)

Must you have such a blatant disregard for the facts ? Katanae are all crafted by master swordsmiths. They are also light blades and thus can be used to sneak attack with. Just ask any ninja.

As mach1.9pants said up-thread, while the two may have the same mechanical statistics in 4E, aesthetically they are very different looking. If this is supposed to model a character, you want that character holding the right weapon, even if the numbers are the same.

Knowing that, I'm not really certain we can infer anything from the screenshots besides the three weapon groups. Short swords are not likely to be "superior" weapons, so I'm not even sure we can infer groupings from this. I guess we have confirmation of a few weapons, but that's about it.

My guess is that short swords willnow be stuff such as ninjatoz; basically light cool light blades. Also whips wioll allow you to do cool stuff such as swing from the chandelier and do a high flying kcik to the enemy! (dragons leap kick!)

The Gladius was a short sword and the Roman's thought it superior.

This is the character visualizer. What the weapon looks like is important. Bastard swords are straight. Katana are curved. Different enough to need a different model.
