[Milwaukee Gamefest, 1-3 August] OAD&D tournament

For those who attended, what was the turn out like?

What was the format, quality of games etc....

In short, what did you think?

Good post!

I can speak only to the few things I saw:

The exhibit area was suprisingly large and well done.

The constume contest looked good.

There were gamers at it all the time until 2 AM in the hall. The only scheduled gaming event I know anything about is the OAD&D tournament that seemed to be really fine from my end, as DM for the last round. However, one of the participants, a chap from my LA game group, said he had a gripe about it. Of course he didn't make the final round...

Anyway, how about some words from others there?!

My expectations were exceeded, to say the least. The Ad&D tournament was a lot of fun. My table had a nice mix of old schoolers and young people. We had some minor gripes about how the points system changed between rounds, but these grapes are sour and all that :p.

The exhibit area was much larger than I thought it'd be, and all of the retailers were friendly and willing to swap stories. The kids were absolutely in awe of the presence of Gary and the Kenzer folk.

It just had such a warm and intimate feel. The GMs that I gamed with were top-notch and everyone seemed to have a pure love for what they were doing.

I can't get over what good a time I had. I will definately be going next year and am spreading the word.

Darn, darn, darn! I wish I could have gone. Sounds like great fun was had by all. Was there an auction, too? I love auctions.

Gary, did you get that copy of The Hamlet of Thumble I sent you yet? Tell me what you think.

Also, I heard you invited some people over for a party at your house. If so, do I get an invite for next year? :)

I believe that there was a Hackmaster tournament there, correct? Did you have the chance to play that?

I played it at Origins and enjoyed it immensely. It definitely has that nostalgic "old school" feeling.

I didn't get into that tournament, but Jolly was running a few "Learn to Hack" events, where people could roll up characters and then he'd run them through a little adventure to get a sense of what the Heackmaster game was all about. We were having so much fun that Jolly noticed we'd gone a half hour overtime, but said he was enjoying himeself and we could keep playing if we all wanted to. (We did) There were a lot of great players in that game.

Sounds like fun. I wanted to head up there, but my wife went out of town and I was stuck with the dogs.

Were all of the games tournements or were their open games?

I love cons because you get to meet all kinds of new people. Some of my favorite gaming is at cons and other public events.

Hola Ed!

They did have an auction, but I didn't get to it, so I have no ideal how much was sold off there.

The Hamlet if Thumble, good name for a halfling community, BTW, came in the morning mail, and I have had opportunity only to scan a bit of it. Was happy to see that a carpenter and a miller were part of the village. I'll email you later about other observations.

We had a room party Saturday night that was open to all. On Sunday night there was a sort of small gathering on our front porch here in Lake Geneva. The Kenzer crew didn't make it, so it was just us and the Trolls for beer and pizza. they left before 10 PM to get on the road, and I happily crapped out soon thereafter

Can't say what next year will bring, but another open house at our hotel room is planned already, even though I have not any formal plan to attend as yet. Yes, we had a lot of fun!

Cheers,
Gary

The con in Milwaukee was indeed a most friendly one with lots of gaming going on, plenty of room to set up your own thing is so desired. What bothered me a bit was that most of the younger players were not there to RPG... that needs to be addressed!

HackMaster was active in demoing at the Kenzer booth, and Jolly even tried to get me in. Ha! I was at the Lejendary Adventure demo table most of my free time (well, when not off having a smoke), but Alex handled things so well I wasn't needed. The FFE crew did a lot of demoing too.

For those who want the "feel" of gaming akin to the free-form days of OA/D&D, come on by and try La sometime;)

Cheers,
Gary

AD&D tourneys at Gamefest

Speaking of which...

Gary and I wrote the last mod for Gamefest... and I have one more up my sleeve that is AD&D (and LA - its dual-stat) that I'd like to see as a Gamefest tourney for its premier (Castle Wolfmoon). BUT... Gary helped me write those, and it looks like I'll probably be writing the adventures for the tourneys thereafter...

...are folks here going to want to string me up if I switch to LA adventures, (and yes, that means an LA tourney)?

Feedback, even that which depicts graphic violence, appreciated.
