When you think of the illithids – mind flayers – what sort of creatures do you associate with them?

Other parasitic worms. That is what an illithid is- a worm that if unimplanted grows into a very large creature called a neolithid.

If you are talking about socially related- aboleths, grimlocks, neogi, drow, and derro. Though I can see intelligent arthropods and molluscs would interact with them as well.

Most of what I associate with Illithids are disgustingly alien creatures which normal surface dwellers fear and cannot begin to fathom. Things whose very life-cycles are threatening to other intelligent life.
