Mind Flayers & related monsters

I find Aboleths and Illithids to be thematically similar.

Similarly, the 3rd edition Doppelganger seems like it would be a sensible companion or slave race to the Illithids.

In my game duergar are dwarves corrupted by illithid experiments. Grimlocks are corrupted humans but they have been bred for so long that they are not very similar anymore.

The voidmind creature template from Monster Manual III is another mind flayer associate.

From my list, I would also add the Ulitharid, and the Urophion, Gohlbrorn, Illithocyte, Voor Larva, and Pthisic from the Monstrous Arcana series. Also, the creatures from the “Sunset World” from Dragon #150.

When you think of the illithids – mind flayers – what sort of creatures do you associate with them?

Slaves of any creature type (I had to rewrite their powers to make this work, but I hate how psionic domination is just a copy of the spell anyway) including grimlocks with levels of Iron Kingdom Ranger and chuuls.

To me Mind Flayers are associated with water friendly creatures like Reptilian and Aquatic races. As arcane magicians they're associated with evil creatures such as Demons and Devils.

Voor Larva
Do they live in wicked domes? (see below for an explanation)

I always think of drow. I blame the cover of Queen of the Spiders. And oddly, I think of those bugs from Wrath of Khan. ;)

OH: "The wicked Voorish domes" were in "The White People", by Arthur Machen.
