Mind Flayers & related monsters

Elder brains and brain golems, neothelid, brain-collectors, aboleths, intellect devourers, githyankis & githzerais, ether scarabs, ropers, ceremorphised creatures (the badly named "half-illithid" template), neogis, thelihydras, soulshrivers, derros.

If I remember correctly, the Thelihydra was basically a hydra like thing but with neothelid parts rather than dragon/lizard parts. Its CR 20, i think.

soulshrivers, if I remember correctly, are big freaky purple-worm esque things made out of basically twisted mind-stuff, which appear every so often when a mindscape is formed between two psionic creatures. That, or they were psionic beholders....

Either way, both monsters were in Brude Cordell's Mindscapes, a Malhavoc book.

Ether scarabs are in the MM2, and are basically scarabs with tentacles that can flit in and out of the etherial plane, basically at will. Fighting them sucks becuase you have to do things like chase them onto the etherial plane, but get back in time before the little tears they open close.

I find that an Ether Scarab can make a cool familiar for a sor/wiz illithid.

Soulshrivers are basically a sort of beholder/illithid mix.
And the thelihydra is indeed a hydra neothelid.

When you think of the illithids – mind flayers – what sort of creatures do you associate with them?

Neither grell nor tentamorts, which surprised me. Most of the time, I see mind flayers as more or less solitary, or powers-behind-the-throne.
