Mirror Man

First Post
Okay, I have a PC who's got it into his head to play a character with mirror-like skin. Okay... I can work with this. After all, this IS a fantasy game. If he wants to look like the Silver Surfer, that's fine. There is nothing changed about his abilities or anything, but I'm sure there will be some game effects.

I told him it would be tough for him to hide. Especially in a desert.

His companions can use him to fight medusas and other gaze attack creatures.

He wouldn't be very welcome in vampire clubs.

Is there anything else I'm forgetting?

BTW, I'm leaving for a few days next morning so I probably won't respond until Wednesday, but I figured I'd let the topic stew until then.

Oh, yeah. We also need to figure out what happened to him to make him like that. Our first thought is a flubbed wish of some kind.

I much prefer curses or accident with a magic item. Howse this:

Your character's grandfather (paternal/maternal he decides), helped a defeat a mighty demon lord from invading his lands. In an act of spite the demon lord tried to curse his grandfather, but the magic was affected by a powerful magic item that his grandfather wielded, protecting him from some of the effect. What happened is now he's cursed (and all his line) to have this silverly sheen for skin. (The demon was trying to trap soul him in a mirror). So now he's marked for all time. While it wasn't the most comfortable life, his grandfather managed to life a reasonable normal life. For now, the curse seems to be permanent and non-harmful....perhaps.

One thing is that he will often be treated with superstitious awe or fear or both. This may amount to either a penalty or a bonus to interpersonal skills such as bluff, intimidate, diplomacy. There might also be some penalty to others' attempts to sense his motives.

The character will stand out in a crowd: if he should ever attempt to avoid notice by mingling with a crowd there should be a large penalty to the hide roll.

The character will be virtually incapable of disguise.

Sometimes when a character attempts to gather information it is important to be inconspicuous: for example when trying to find out things that informants won't want anyone to know they gave up. In some circumstances the character should get a far fiercer penalty to gather information than a policeman trying to interview his snouts wearing a uniform.

If the character is busking or performing in taverns (for example), his appearance will at first fascinate audiences and attract larger crowds. Perhaps a bonus to perform would be in order for a few hours in a village, a few days in a town, a few weeks in a city, before the novelty wears off.

Perhaps most important, NPCs in general will notice and remember the character. So anyone who is trying to track him down will have an easy description, and lots of witnesses will remember the character. Give a hefty bonus to anyone trying to gather information about him, etc.

Animals will find the character pretty freaky, especially horses and dogs. Give a penalty on sneak and hide when dogs are about. And give a penalty on ride unless the character is riding a horse that he has accustomed to his appearance (takes at least two days and an appropriate roll--ride, handle animal, animal empathy), or a month of continual exposure.

The character will have a difficult time with romantic interests such as kidnapped princesses, etc. Most will react to him as to a freak: with initial revulsion that is easily overcome only by a fetishistic curiosity. Any relationship that has any chance to work out happily, any relationship based on fundamentals rather than superficialities, will have to overcome immense initial difficulties.

Damn! I was looking forward to checking out the boards after my trip to see if I generated a thread to be proud of, and I get two of the most perfect answers to my questions within a few minutes! Thanks guys. :D

Don't write the thread off too soon. As Snoweel very correctly points out, I don't have anything like a monopoly on imagination. People will suggest lots of things I haven't thought of.

In my campaign, we have a host of elementals beyond the standard four: memory elementals, mirror elementals, radiance elementals, cloud elementals, and much more.

A mirror elemental once came to the Material Plane, took on the form of a human male, and had several children with human women. One of my players played one of these kids as a PC. In our case, we only gave her completely silver eyes and hair, but we could have easily gone the whole Silver Surfer route. Or give her that as an alternate form; or have her grow into that form as she got older.

I gave the character some minor benefits: +2 vs. gaze attacks, +1 to level when casting Mirror Image (she was an illusionist), that kind of thing. And a disadvantage: fear of the dark.

This was back in the 2nd-edition days, and we just sort of winged it. Today I would either invent a race or a template. And I may have to do that soon, because they're still around....
