Missile Weapons at Point Blank Range

Is it really not stated anywhere directly that you can attack an adjacent foe with a ranged attack?

It certainly is implied:

Actually what you quoted shows that it CAN be done. If you couldn't, then there would be no need to state that it invokes an attack of opportunity.

This can be a pretty good schtick. Your defenders mark a target then you walk right up to it, and do a ranged attack from an adjacent square. at that point your target has to determine if taking a free basic attack against you is worth getting one or two in return from your defenders.

Indeed. This.

Another interesting effect while being adjacent to a foe with a ranged weapon, you still threaten since you can attack unarmed or with an improved weapon. That is a different rule compared to 3e.

It allows for CA with a ranged weapon without requiring distant advantage, as long as you don't mind the OA.

When you paragon path to "battlefield archer" you get this nice path feature:
Battle Surge (16th level) : When you spend an action point to take an extra action or to gain the benefit of your Archer’s Action, you also gain a +5 bonus to AC against opportunity attacks until the end of the encounter.

Tell your fighter to mark the bad guy, then step in there and shoot! That's a net +9 to AC when added with DM & the minus for the foe attacking someone other than your fighter. You get your prime shot bonus to hit, CA bonus if you position right, and, if you have the Called Shot feat, add +5 damage to each hit! Twin Strike can be deadly! Plus your fighter gets an OA as mentioned above.

Just don't stay too long...Battle Surge & DM don't apply to the foe's regular actions. Dance in, stylishly place two shots in the foes' ass, then dance back out before he places his sword someplace dear to you.

As quoted earlier in the thread, ranged weapons can not be used as a melee weapon.

Adjacent is not the same as threatened. a) reach threatens at range, b) threatened by one foe, shooting at another which doesn't, c) foes that you are adjacent to but don't threaten e.g. you're invisible. The list goes on.

A ranged weapon can however be used as an improvised weapon, which can be used as a melee weapon. So you could use a magic bow for example, for an opportunity attack, albeit with no proficiency, no magic enhancement, STR vs AC, and lousy damage.
