Monk?

As I recall, the Battle Dancer is essentially a chaotically aligned monk, with more/different weapons, no stunning fist and some other tweaks.

I did that, too, just to see what kind of trainwreck it would be.

Yeah, they blew it. I thought they would try to appeal to either new players (to reel them into the game) or experienced players (to get them to watch the show) at the cost of the other, but they managed to make it unappealing to both. I would have:
- interviewed players before matches to find out how their decks work (it aired months later, so no trade secrets)
- shown the players' hands so we could make decisions alongside them & second-guess (and the commentators could as well)

I've seen that. Maybe it's just me but it looks inferior to straight Monk without ACFs. And that is seriously saying something. Heck, a lotta stuff from Dragon Mag seems underpowered. Or should that be reasonably powered? I jumped straight into DnD's deep optimization pool with 3 websites guiding my first character so I've never played unoptimized before.

Trying to think of ways to abuse BloodStorm /Zen Archery but thrown weapons sadly don't provoke AoO and Thunderous Throw only works on your turn. Any ideas would be welcome.

Back to Monk. BloodStorm Blade + Zen Archery. Throwing fists as common sense throws fits. Anyone know how this would work out?
Might want to start with an unarmored warforged and battlefist him. However I would use carmendine monk and brutal throw, intelligence has better synergy with the other base class used to get Bloodstorm Blade.

Are there any Ability Damage attacks a Monk can capitalize upon? Can a Monk punch for 1 point of Con damage repeatedly to a monster, for example?

There's the Touch of Golden Ice feat, but it require you to be a LG exalted character and has a static fort save DC of 14. But against any evil creature w/ lots of charisma and/or a "EVIL" creature type like undead or evil outsider, it can do crazy large amounts of dex damage when they roll a 1.

I've so got to go read some splat books. I have no idea what most of the feats and PrCs mentioned in this thread are.

But to address the OP I will once again mention the Human Fighter4/ Monk12 character I was playing in the Age of Worms AP, Surya of the Mountain. Yeah, it's the umpteemth time I've gone on about her on this forum, but who among us can resist an invitation to talk about our characters?

She had lots of versatility to make up for less raw power. She had Combat Expertise, Power Attack, Mobility, Spring Attack, Whirlwind Attack, Improved Trip, Combat Reflexes and Leadership. In combat I played her as a flanker who would cheerfully go anywhere on the battlefield, causing havoc among the enemy and supporting her team mates.

Of course the hard bit was getting the Priest of Kord to wait the one whole round for her to get into flanking position and try to trip an opponent before letting go with his Feat of Strength, buffed out the wazzoo, full Power Attack.

Out of combat she fulfilled the role of scout and trail blazer until later on a new player joined us and we got a ranger. Actually even after that Surya worked as the scout with the ranger as that character's player usually refused to leave the bosom of the party. Also she was much better at 3-D movement (climbing, jumping that sort of thing.)

ANd when she got her bard cohort at 12th level she was suddenly the recipient of buff spells, something that was in short supply prior to that. And bardic song too.

Too sum up: I loved playing her. She was fun, versatile enough to be involved in pretty much any scenario. Not a power hitter by any means, which could suck when the One Big Monster* reared its ugly head. But even there she would jump in, act as a distraction take some hits etc.

cheers all.

*The One Big Monster is my name for that tendancy in 3.X adventures to make many encounters with One Big Monster with high attack, AC and and damage. This monster is designed to take on the presumed Min-Maxed characters that the players will bring to the table. It tends to make for boring combats in that everyone rushes forward to stand next to each other and then slug it out.

The monsters designed to take on min-maxed characters are not the ones with high AC and damage.
