Monks with Shurikens/ Monk Weapons

Thanx for the info. Unfortunately, for the character idea i had shuriken are extremely pointless :( Too bad, i thought it would be a fun idea to play. Just too little damage potential, and pretty much useless when it comes to any sort of DR, unless you have extremely high strength. Would be too much of a liability later levels when i cant do anything unless i go unarmed attacks, but too many feats would have been wasted already.

When reading through the SRD, I did not notice anything that said one could throw 3 shuriken per round like one could in 3.0. If one can't throw 3/round anymore - what good is spending a feat (if necessary) to get a measly 1-2 points of damage?

you can flurry with them ;)

other than that.. well.. umm.. ninjas are cool?

(oh, and it is 1/attack now, not 3/attack.. so yeah, that does limit some of their former uses)

Because there are several ways to pump up that measily 1-2 points of damage.

Weapon Spec.
Point Blank Shot
Sneak Attack
Favored Enemy bonuses
Greater Magic Weapon spell (can hit 50 shurikens in 1 casting).

I am sure there are other ways to pump up the damage that I have not mentioned. Shurikens can be VERY effective, but you have to pretty much have the right character build to take advantage of them.

all of those work just as well for every other weapon, so that is not a reason to pick up shuriken as a feat. A character could simply use a bow, or sling, or something else to do more base damage and be able to use all of those, without even having to spend the extra feat.

But you get your Str bonus with shuriken's now making them very nice for those half-orc monks out there. So not as many attacks, but more damage for each.

Like I said, it depends on the build. Have you seen the Monk with Flurry + TWF + Rapid Shot build? They can get up to 20+ attacks by level 20. I can't think of any other weapon that would allow for something like this...

Another good use for Shuriken is with a PrC from... I think it's Complete Warrior. I forget the PrC, but it grants the character the ability to toss 2 tiny weapons from their hand. With the Shuriken it essentially lets you toss 2 Shurikens for every 1 attack.

Like I said, it's all in the character build.

but then we arent talking about useing a feat on it, it is a class feature of the monk who can use shurikens anyway.. but then monks dont get specialization.. so then we arent looking at a pure monk anyway and probably loseing some of those attacks (20+ is pretty doubtful unless you are useing the palm throw or whatever.. but then you dont get to add your str bonus..)

For a monk? sure, they can flurry with them like I said earlier.. but for anyone else? might as well use throwing daggers or a sling.

I don't see how. They should be able to do 7 attacks at level 20 with all those feats. 3 for the BAB, 2 more for flurry, one for fighting with two weapons, and one for the rapid shot.

monk = 5
twf, itwf, gtwf = +3
rapid shot = +1

palm throw = x2

= 18

Probably some other tricks I missed somewhere.. but that is 18.. of course I believe that there are some pretty hefty restrictions.. such as no str bonus, limited/no precission damage, etc.. along with a list of feats, required classes and prc and all only with a shuriken..

Somehow I doubt it is overpowered, but who knows? ;)
