With the sort of leaning into Far Realmsian themes to aberrations vs monstrosities, it would be cool if D&D took a page from Ruins of Symbaroum and added something like that setting’s Corruption that can forcibly change anything into abominations.

If exposure to Far Realms is implied to bring those changes… put that in!

You can still have an orc, but now it is a two step process (I think). You take an NPC stat block and modify it to be an orc? I am still having a hard time understanding what they are going to do based on what they have said / written.
That's why I suspect something very much like the 2014 NPC Race adjustment chart would fit the known information.

I've always thought a mechanic like that would be a good way to explain all of the templates of the 3E era. Maybe your grandmother wasn't a dragon, she just lived by a river that flowed past a green dragon's lair.

I might even expand this mechanic to the creation of half-elves and half-orcs (RIP), dragonborn, tieflings, etc.

I think part of the Githyanki's play against any of the Illithid plans are that they have the pact with Tiamat, the most obvious part of that pact is that they get Red Dragon allies. And Gith who lead the original rebellion is imprisoned somewhere in the Nine Hells by Tiamat.

The idea that there might be something lingering from the Illithids, might be some justification for 1e and 2e Githzerai being generally the paranoid types. Though I living in Limbo and going into Psionics are part of their defenses against such a thing from the Illithids.

Though maybe the Githzerai Great Old One Warlock who has a pact with a Slaad Lord like Ygorl, Ssendam or Rennbuu might have different ideas about the direction the Githzerai people should take.

They clarify that the Aberration creature type means that the monsters are unnatural creatures specifically from or linked to the Far Realm. So, Kuo Toa, Grimlocks, Gith, Piercers/Ropers, and more are now Aberrations. Slaad will presumably have some lore connection to the Far Realm now.

No stat blocks were presented IIRC. They mentioned new stat blocks (Githyanki Dracomancer, Kuo Toa, Blob of Annihilation, etc). There was a lot of new art.

They mentioned that if they were completely redesigning the game they would probably remove the Ooze as a separate creature type and fold them into the other creature types such as Aberrations, Monstrosities, and Undead.

The only Humanoid monster stat blocks are in the NPC section, so old Humanoid monsters are either moved to a different creature type (Gith, Grimlocks, and Kuo Toa to Aberration, Goblinoids to Fey, etc) or are being absorbed into the NPC stat block section of the MM (Orcs).
Derros already changed to aberrations in MMotM.

Very convenient for my current adventure.
