Monte's NEW new ranger and other BoHM tidbits.

I read that on the site. I was wondering exactly WHAT the oath was. Mmm might have to steal that one away to my campaign. A certain vengeful paladin might need that. :) So when you penalities, are those based on the type of oath feat taken or more just a general penalty? How specific does the oath have to be?

Also could go over the stuff on Clerics and Paladins, like how much of a change is there on these varients?

The cleric material answers a few concerns that you may have about bringing the clergy back into the world that surrounds them (with duties and suchnot), and discusses some possible variations on the granting of specific spells that could go a long way in making clerics more of a reflection of their religion.

Paladins - there is a variant paladin. Biggest change -- it gets a special sword at high levels that eventually gets bane and holy qualities. There are also NG and CG variant paladins, VERY similar to Good, which also just came out. I am much more keen on BotR's holy warrior, personally. :)

But no changes to say skills or powers they gain other than that? Like no HD changes? Or added skills?

No, the penalty is a -1 morale penalty to all checks for a month. Does not depend on oath type. (Though that sounds like a cool variant.)

The oath has to be "very specific".

What? This passed completely under my radar -- is this the divine version of the Eldritch might series?

You must have a short in your Josh. :) Yes it's similar to BoEM apparently.

I immediately looked to see how this ranger variant worked. It is basically similar to the one he put out earlier, except that it is toned down a bit. As with the original Monte ranger it gets bonus feats. However, it does not give the ranger an extra bonus feat at first level (beyond tracking), and it only gets bonus feats every 4 levels instead of three. It still has a good reflex and fortitude save.
Yay! That's exactly how I changed Monte's ranger for my games.

(Except that I didn't give it 1d10 as HD.)

So it's not like "I swear to kill all Ogres" and thus you keep getting that bonus to killing ogres?

(MMm well I might do that then when pick this up.)

Still d10. They get a sacred aura protective ability at 20th level.

Skills... looks the same.

I am really not seeing the need for the variant paladin myself. But the blurb says its for those who find the paladin weak at high levels (having run a paladin to 17th level in my game I don't see it personally), so the changes are mostly focussed on making the paladin nastier at high levels.

The Oath Feat Idea rocks - especially if divorced from the idea of feats, to give your players the option to pick it up at any time they wish to dedicate themselves.

As I said, the book is loaded with roleplay-friendly rules.

Rangerwickett about 2 months ago lamented the fact that there were not more non-combat oriented feats. This may not perfectly fit what he was talking about, but it definitely is a step toward what he referred to.

No... you name a very specific task you must complete within a years time.
